EyeVerify Helps Answer `Who Are You?'

Proving your identity can be as simple as providing a cell phone camera photo of yourself, thanks to EyeVerify. Its technology, called eye vein biometrics, matches the blood vessels in the white of the eye to a known photo of the person in question, letting you ?verify you are who you say you are,? according to the company website.

With this easy, safe method and a cell phone, people can approve transactions and gain access to various information in a way EyeVerify calls ?secure, scalable and convenient.?

?EyeVerify?s patented vascular `eyeprint? solution uses built-in cameras in today?s mobile devices to image and then pattern match the blood vessels in the whites of users? eyes with just a glance for highly accurate, fast and convenient mobile identity protection,? Toby Rush, CEO and founder, explained to RESCUECOM.

?Mobile devices have become the standard for how we manage our work and personal lives, which puts us at a higher risk of identity theft and fraud,? Rush continued. ?Yesterday?s authentication methods, specifically usernames and passwords, no longer cut it. Today?s smartphones have evolved enough to allow them to capture our true identity through biometrics, which can?t be lost, stolen, forgotten or spoofed.?

The steps mentioned on the website to reduce identity theft are image capture, segmentation, image enhancement, feature extraction and matching. This means that from the cell phone photo, the software examines the relevant areas of four eye segments to see if they match the known parameters of the person to verify. Processing the image takes less than one second. The technology will note if the person meets the identification criteria.

?Fingerprints and iris were the early standards in biometrics,? Rush noted. ?However, these technologies aren?t available across all smartphones. EyeVerify is the first and only truly mobile authentication solution leveraging smartphone cameras and the uniqueness of eye vein patterns to obtain a person?s eyeprint with a glance, redefining new standards for simple, secure mobile identity protection.?

Dr. Reza Derakhshani, now chief scientist of EyeVerify, and Dr. Arun Ross visualized how to use patterns in the white of the eye ? eye vein biometrics ? to identify a unique individual. They received a patent in 2008 for this process.

As EyeVerify helps ensure identity security, companies such as RESCUECOM can help iPhone users with Internet security and iPhone support seven days a week.

Other companies can incorporate EyeVerify technology, in the form of a software module, into their products.

This technology applies to authorizing electronic transactions from a cell phone, such as banking matters, medical information or resetting passwords. Other potential applications are in third-world countries where people might not have traditional identification papers.

Some industries that could benefit from eye vein biometrics identification include government, financial services, transportation, higher education and health care, plus hospitality and gaming.

EyeVerify?s technology is now in beta testing for iPhone and Android, with general release set for early next year.
