U.S.-EU pact would help competitiveness, security: Clinton

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A trade agreement between the United States and the European Union would give the transatlantic partners a much-needed economic boost at a time of rising global competition, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Thursday.

"If we get this right, an agreement that opens markets and liberalizes trade would shore up our global competitiveness for the next century, creating jobs and generating hundreds of billions of dollars for our economies," Clinton said in a speech at the Brookings Institution.

Clinton's strong endorsement of the pact was the latest indication that the United States and the 27 nations of the European Union could launch talks on a comprehensive trade agreement early next year.

A high-level, US-EU working group led by U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht has been studying the issue for the past year and is expected to formally recommend negotiations in a report to be released sometime in December or January.

The United States and the European Union already have a huge bilateral trade and investment relationship.

But Clinton argued a trade pact that strengthens those ties would increase transatlantic security "in the face of rising challenges to our economic model" and the growth of many "behind-the-border" measures that impede trade.

Scaling the Concert Experience: How Artists Are ... - audio korner

There are few moments as exciting as when an artist appears on the stage. While it?s ideally seen firsthand at a concert, it?s only a little less of a rush to see a performer emerging from backstage (or rising slowly from below) and hearing the audience?s cheers through a video. Remember the excitement of watching the live stream of Coachella for the first time?

Music festivals first ventured into live streams a few years ago. Kanye West and Coachella did this last year. The live stream makes sense: since the organizers must go through the work of setting up the festival, they may as well film and live-stream it to reach a greater amount of people. Instead of only showing the results of their work to the thousands at the event, they can make it available to millions around the world. From a business standpoint, Coachella is sponsored, but also generates revenue from people attending shows ? on ticket sales, partnerships, merchandise, and the such. They are merchants selling their work in the experienced marketplace.

According to CNET, the Coachella 2011 live stream received nearly 4 million views in the three days it was available. This kind of attention is appealing to another party that also makes the bulk of their revenue from live shows. With the growing availability of equipment and technology, musicians are now exploring live streaming as a medium to promote their own live shows.

It?s hardly news to say that Jay-Z has been a pioneer in live streams: he was streaming live from SXSW, Made in America, and his final show at the Barclays Center debut. He even documented his ride to the Barclays Center on the New York City subway, which received a remarkable amount of coverage from the press. It makes sense to Jay-Z, who explains the economics of music:

?For instance, tours are the most lucrative aspect of a recording artist?s career; you have a lot more control and fewer people are in your pockets as compared to album sales,? writes Jay-Z in his autobiography Decoded.

?It can also be stressful beyond belief,? he continues. Jay-Z then explains how touring becomes more about mental endurance and stamina, rather than just talent. This quality is extremely difficult to scale after a certain level: how can artists continue to reach a greater number of fans, and potential fans, once they?ve sold out the capacity of an arena or a music festival in almost any spare time that they have available?

The History of Music and Video

Musicians have constantly explored with video. For example, the Eagles did it over a decade ago when they reunited for one final show after a 14-year breakup. They recognized that it was a moment that they couldn?t miss capturing.

Back in 1994, video wasn?t as easily distributed. The Eagles sold the film of their live show, Hell Freezes Over, on VHS, LaserDisc and DVD. They ended up selling over 800,000 copies of this video in the United States alone.

Today, artists don?t have to worry about recouping the cost of distribution. Rather than worry about DVDs, retailers and wholesalers, the only thing that it costs them is bandwidth. As a result, video serves a different purpose. Instead of trying to sell video, and make money off it, the video can be a free sample ? just a sliver of a taste ? of the real concert experience. Video is an extremely different medium from sound; the visual aspect is able to replicate aspects to a moment that can?t be expressed purely through sound.

For example, independent musician Ryan Leslie started his journey crossing the chasm from obscurity to early adopters with his YouTube videos. There?s a particularly popular video of him in the studio creating his single ?Addiction?; at the time of writing, it?s sitting at just over 4 million views. While the Eagles are certainly much more well-known throughout the world than Ryan Leslie at the time of writing, even they couldn?t manage to hit those numbers for one of their biggest moments. This is the power of the internet.

Connecting the Dots: Concerts and Video

The unknown is interesting. The appeal of concerts, sporting events and other forms of live entertainment play on our fascination with the unknown. Each new sports game offers the underdog an opportunity to prove themselves against their opponent (no matter how improbable, the chance still exists). It offers every athlete a chance to excel. Concerts share this element:

?Every night you?re in a different city, every crowd brings a different vibe, every show is subtly different ? but at the same time, you have to hit the same marks night after night, find a new way to get your own energy up when you?re performing the same song you did the night before,? Jay-Z explains in Decoded. ?When you?re on tours like the ones I?ve done over the last decade, you?re like a professional athlete, except that night after night you?re the only one with the bat.?

Concerts serve as the vehicle where the unexpected happens. Remember that first year of OVO Fest, when Drake brought Eminem and Jay-Z to Toronto? Remember when Jay-Z brought G.O.O.D. Music to Made in America? As a result of the spread and breadth of social media, artists will be even more rewarded with buzz for exceeding fans? expectations.

This buzz will increase the appeal of the artist?s next concert or festival appearance, as people wonder to themselves, ?Ooh, what will happen this time?? The demand for the experience will increase; for example, a proposal on the city of Indio?s website shows that Coachella could be planning for five festival weekends next year.

The ubiquity of videos and cameras are forcing artists to move down this path. Whether they like it or not, they will get filmed. They may as well control the majority of viewers? attention by drawing them to the most attractive, high-quality videos available.

The Experience Economy Goes Mainstream

Money isn?t always about an extravagant lifestyle: for many artists, it can just be about full freedom of expression. And in this case, when free video intersects with music, there is another opportunity to generate revenue. Sponsorships and product placement are a given; more importantly, for artists, it could be about selling more high-margin merchandise.

The Eagles sold an album with the same title as their video, Hell Freezes Over. It?s a live recording of them at the show, and features some of their biggest hits. According to the RIAA, this album went 8x platinum in the United States. Now, the scale of the Eagles? success with their live album is not going to happen for any artist at any regular concert. Hell Freezes Over took place in a different time, when record sales weren?t affected by downloads; it also marked a pivotal point in the band?s life. However, it is still strong evidence that the demand for merchandise can be made.

Since the Eagles were doing the show anyway, they may as well lease some equipment, hire some coordinators, and capture the moment on audio. This turns into more than just a piece of media ? it doubles as a collectible, a memento for people to reminisce on ?that awesome night.?

Similarly, Jay-Z sells the experience of the concert through an iTunes compilation called Live in Brooklyn. The appearance of Beyonc? in ?Young Forever,? the mix of ?Give it to Me?/?Big Pimpin?,? and the energy offered by the audience in applause and cheering are the only differences between this and buying the singles on iTunes (it currently ranks third on the album listings for Jay-Z).

?The way consumers interact with music is different now,? explains Troy Carter in an interview with The Guardian. Capturing live moments opens up opportunities for guest appearances, freestyles and live improvisations to also be recorded, immortalized and available for mass consumption. The artists still need to work extremely hard. The only difference is now they can make a much greater impact, and potentially generate much more revenue for the same amount of effort.

The Law of Attraction History | self improvement made simple

You need a 7 Day BrainwashIt is important that you understand that the law of attraction is not simply New Age nonsense (many descriptions of the law of attraction refer to it as a product of a New Age Mentality). The principles of the law of attraction date back far beyond the new found popularity of the New Age.

The immortal Buddha was actually one of the first to introduce man to the law of attraction. He said, ?What you have become is what you have thought.? This was a principle that the people of the east were acquainted with for centuries before it began to sweep into the western hemisphere.

The concept of karma may also have drawn its roots from the law of attraction. Karma states that you will eventually be revisited by that which you have sent out into the universe. If you have practiced kindness and compassion, you will receive it in kind. If you have been deliberately cruel to another, you will receive back into your life that cruelty which you have sent out. Your actions and thoughts morph into physical entities, causing the universe to react in kind.

The law of attraction began to gain popularity in the western hemisphere in the 19th century, as people began to appreciate the power of positive thinking and how to apply it to their lives. This new concept was first introduced to the general public by William Walker Atkinson, the editor of New Thought magazine, who published a book called Thought Vibration or the Law of Attraction in the Thought World? in 1906. Other works followed, including the famous Master Key System? by Charles F Haanel, and Think and Grow Rich?, written in 1937 by Napoleon Hill.

As you can see, the concept of the law of attraction is not new. The idea that thought can have a predominate affect on the course of a man?s destiny has been taught by wise men throughout the ages, and has given rise to a whole new era of beliefs. The principles have been used, either consciously or unconsciously, by the rich and successful for thousands of years.

The Secret?

You have probably heard of the movie, The Secret?- it has been largely responsible for the recent interest in the law of attraction and is well worth watching. The Secret? is actually based on older classics? written in the early part of the 20th Century, such as the Master Key System? and The Science of Getting Rich?. However, knowing about The Secret? (the law of attraction) is not enough- you have to learn how to apply it and how to control your thoughts and feelings so that your desires can manifest into reality.

500px for iPhone and iPad review

500px for iPhone and iPad review

500px is a premium photo sharing platform for professional and aspiring photographers for the web and iPad that has now made its debut to the iPhone, and the iPad version got a nice upgrade as well. It's beautiful. 500px for iPhone and iPad lets you scroll through your friends' activity in Flow, discover gorgeous photography in Popular, browse through photographers' profiles, and more.

500px is marketed for professional and aspiring photographers, so to keep that spirit within 500px, mobile uploads are not available on the iPhone and iPad; all photos must be uploaded through the web. However, you can browse through all the photos and view them on the gorgeous Retina displays of the iPhone and iPad as well as like, mark as favorite, and leave comments.

The iPhone version of 500px has three main sections: Home, Photos, and Your Account (named after you). From Home, you can go to Flow, Following, and Favorites. Everything except Flow is displayed as a grid making it easy to see up to 15 photos at once so you can specifically choose which ones you want to see bigger. Flow is a stream that displays all the recent activity of the people you follow and displays one photo at a time.

In the Photos section, you can find the Popular, Editors' Choice, Upcoming, and Fresh feeds. The are displayed in a grid making it easy to casually browse through what's available.

In Your Account, you can access your Profile or Flow. Profiles show one of the user's most recent photos at the top as a header. I actually don't like this because since the most recent photo is at the bottom of the initial screen, profiles usually look rather repetitive and boring. 500px should either allow users to choose their header image or automatically choose a photo that is further down the user's profile.

The iPad version of 500px is a little different and features a sidebar that gives access to Popular, Editors' Choice, Upcoming, and Fresh. Although the iPad version doesn't have Flow, it does include the 500px Market where you can purchase and download your favorite photos for personal use.

When you sign up for 500px, you are automatically granted a 14-day trial to experience all the available features. Once your 14 days are up, you can choose to continue using a free account or sign up for a premium account that gives you unlimited uploads and collections, a personal portfolio, advanced statistics, and more. A free account allows 10 uploads per week and the ability to sell your photos in the Market. A premium account costs $20/yr and $49.95/yr for the Plus and Awesome memberships, receptively.

The good

  • A world of incredible images in your pocket: the greatest photos, anywhere.
  • Stay up to date on your friends' activity using Flow (iPhone only)
  • Browse through incredible community-selected galleries and editor-curated selections.
  • Interact with the community by commenting on photos, liking them, or adding them to your favorites for later viewing.
  • Receive notifications when the community members interact with you and your photos.
  • Purchase and download gorgeous high-resolution digital versions of your favorite photos on the 500px Market (iPad only).
  • Gorgeous on Retina displays

The bad

  • Flow is not featured on the iPad
  • Cannot make purchases with iPhone
  • Header images for profiles are often times the same photo as the user's most recent photo. This makes the profile too repetitive.

The conclusion

The iPhone and iPad app for 500px is absolutely gorgeous and a great way to browse though photos on the platform. Even if you're not a professional or aspiring photographer, you can still use 500px as a way to discover and enjoy fabulous photography.

French court overturns Concorde crash conviction

VERSAILLES, France (AP) ? In a surprise ruling in one of the most high-profile disasters in aviation history, a French appeals court Thursday overturned manslaughter convictions against Continental Airlines and a mechanic for the 2000 crash of an Air France Concorde that killed 113 people.

The crash hastened the end for the already-faltering supersonic Concorde, synonymous with high-tech luxury but a commercial failure. The program, jointly operated by Air France and British Airways, was taken out of service in 2003.

In the accident, which occurred on July 25, 2000, the jet crashed into a hotel near Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport soon after taking off, killing all 109 people aboard and four on the ground. Most of the victims were Germans heading to a cruise in the Caribbean.

A mistake made weeks earlier and thousands of miles away by a Continental mechanic in Houston played a crucial role in the crash, the court found.

According to the original ruling, mechanic John Taylor fitted the wrong metal strip on a Continental DC-10. The piece ultimately fell off on the runway in Paris, puncturing the Concorde's tire. The burst tire sent bits of rubber flying, puncturing the fuel tanks, which started the fire that brought down the plane.

On Thursday, Judge Michele Luga overturned the 2010 manslaughter conviction of Continental and the mechanic, saying their mistakes didn't make them criminally responsible for the deaths.

Even if Taylor knew that the metal strip could become detached, "he could never have imagined a scenario where this simple titanium blade could cause such a disaster," Luga said in court.

Part of the problem was that the Concorde's design left it vulnerable to shock, according to judicial investigators who said officials had known about the problem for more than 20 years. The lower court ruled that though French officials had missed opportunities to improve the Concorde over the years, they could "be accused of no serious misconduct."

Outside the courtroom, Continental Airlines lawyer Olivier Metzner called the decision "historic" and finally put an end "to 12 years of wrongful accusations" against Continental.

"What caused the crash was a plane that shouldn't have been flying," Metzner said of the Concorde, which he claimed was only being kept in service for "economic and symbolic reasons."

Crash victims' families, however, expressed disappointment with the ruling.

Stephane Gicquel, head of a group of victims' families, said Thursday's ruling left them with "a sense of powerlessness."

"The court says the plane shouldn't have flown. It did fly, but no conclusion is drawn," he said.

Attempts to reach Taylor for comment were unsuccessful.

The French court that convicted Continental and the mechanic in 2010 for the crash imposed about ?2 million ($2.7 million) in damages and fines on the carrier. The appeals court upheld Continental's civil responsibility and ordered it to pay Air France ?1 million ($1.3 million) in damages and interests.

Parties including Air France and Continental compensated the families of most victims years ago, so financial claims were not the trial's focus ? the main goal was to assign responsibility. In France, unlike in many other countries, plane crashes routinely lead to trials to assign criminal responsibility ? cases that often drag on for years.

"This was a tragic accident and we support the court's decision that Continental did not bear fault," Megan McCarthy, a spokeswoman for Chicago-based United Continental Holdings Inc., said in a written statement. Continental merged with United in 2010.

The Flight Safety Foundation, an organization that monitors aviation safety, applauded the decision.

"We're very pleased that courts are recognizing that professional human error does not amount to criminal conduct, even where it can lead to catastrophic consequences," said Kenneth Quinn, general counsel for the FSF, based in Alexandria, VA.

At the time it was launched, the Concorde supersonic jet was the height of luxury, flying between New York and the European capitals of London and Paris in less than four hours, instead of a standard flight of over seven hours. Flying west, British Airways boasted, the flight's well-heeled travelers could effectively arrive at their destinations before they left.

The Concorde "was the culmination of a belief in the aviation industry that aircraft would always get faster," said Jeremy Kinney, curator in the Smithsonian Institution's aeronautics division in Washington, D.C. "It was the ultimate fast airplane."

Twenty of the aircraft were built and 14 entered commercial operation, Kinney said.

In the years it took French judicial investigators to work their way to trial, amassing 80,000 pages of court documents, the Concordes were revamped, retired and finally sent to museums.

The Concorde wasn't the first supersonic jet to crash in Paris. The Soviet Union's equivalent, the Tupolev 144, made its debut in December 1968, just days before the first flight of the Concorde. They were mothballed after one crashed at the 1973 Paris Air Show.

Egyptians flocked to Cairo's central Tahrir square on Tuesday for a protest against Egypt's president in a significant test of whether the opposition can rally the street behind it in a confrontation aimed at forcing the Islamist leader to rescind decrees that granted him near absolute powers. (AP) ? More than 200,000 people packed Cairo's central Tahrir square on Tuesday, chanting against Egypt's Islamist president in a powerful show of strength by the opposition demanding Mohammed Morsi revoke edicts granting himself near autocratic powers.

With the mass protests in Tahrir and in several other cities ? comparable in size to those during last year's uprising that overthrew autocrat Hosni Mubarak ? opposition to the decrees issued last week turned into a broader outpouring of anger against the rule of Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood.

Waving Egypt's red, white and black flags, crowds of protesters marched across Cairo to stream into the iconic central plaza, birthplace of the anti-Mubarak uprising. By the evening, it was thronging with a crowd that appeared to be more than 200,000. Clashes broke out in several cities as Morsi opponents tried to attacked offices of the Brotherhood, setting fire to at least one.

Ringing out at Tahrir was the central chant of the Arab Spring revolts: "The people want to bring down the regime," and "erhal, erhal" ? Arabic for "leave, leave."

"Suddenly Morsi is issuing laws and becoming the absolute ruler, holding all powers in his hands," said protester Mona Sadek, a 31-year-old engineering graduate who wears the Islamic veil, a hallmark of piety. "Our revolt against the decrees became a protest against the Brotherhood as well."

But Gehad el-Haddad, a senior adviser to the Brotherhood and its political party, said the opposition was "very divided" and that Morsi would not back down. "We are not rescinding the declaration," he told The Associated Press. Morsi's edicts effectively neutralize the judiciary, which was the only branch of government in a position to balance Morsi, who holds not only executive but also legislative authority.

The staunch stand taken by Morsi and his Brotherhood sets the stage for a drawn-out battle with the opposition that could paralyze the nation at a time when its economic woes are deepening, security continues to be tenuous and strikes by an entire spectrum of white and blue collar workers show no sign of abating.

Protest organizers on a stage in the square called for another mass rally on Friday. If the Brotherhood responds with mass rallies of its own, as some of its leaders have hinted, it would raise the prospect of greater violence after a series of clashes between the two camps in recent days.

Even as the crowds swelled in Tahrir, clashes erupted nearby between several hundred young protesters throwing stones and police firing tear gas on a street off Tahrir leading to the U.S. Embassy. Clouds of tear gas hung close to the ground at the area. Clashes have been taking place at the site for several days, fueled by anger over police abuses, separately from the crisis over Morsi.

A photographer working for the AP, Ahmed Gomaa, was heavily beaten by police using sticks while covering the clashes Tuesday. Police took his equipment, and Gomaa was taken to hospital for treatment.

In the Nile Delta industrial city of Mahalla el-Kobra, workers and activists tried to storm the headquarters of the Brotherhood's political party, but were blocked by Brotherhood members who formed a human chain around the building. The two sides clashes, pelting each other with stones and fire bombs as police fired tear gas in violence that security officials said left 100 injured.

Rival rallies by Morsi opponents and supporters turned into brief clashes in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria, then anti-Morsi protesters broke into the local office of the Muslim Brotherhood, throwing furniture out the windows and trying unsuccessfully to set fire to it. Protesters also set fire to Brotherhood offices in the city of Mansoura.

The edicts have energized the liberal and secular opposition after months of divisions and uncertainty while Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups rose to dominate the political landscape.

But the backlash has been further fueled by broader anger over what critics see as the Brotherhood's monopolizing of power after its election victories the past year for parliament and the presidency.

Raafat Magdi, an engineer, said, "We want to change this whole setting. The Brotherhood hijacked the revolution."

"People woke up to his (Morsi's) mistakes, and in any new elections they will get no votes," said Magdi, who was among a crowd of around 10, 000 marching from the Cairo district of Shubra to Tahrir to the beat of drums and chants against the Brotherhood. Reform leader Mohammed ElBaradie led the march.

Former presidential candidate Amr Moussa, now a prominent opposition leader, said the protest showed "where the nation's political forces stand on the constitutional declaration."

"Wisdom dictates that the declaration must be reconsidered," Moussa, a former Arab League chief, told the private CBC TV station by telephone.

Morsi says the decrees are necessary to protect the "revolution" and the nation's transition to democratic rule.

His declaration made all his decisions immune to judicial review and banned the courts from dissolving the upper house of parliament and an assembly writing the new constitution, both of which are dominated by Islamists. The decree also gave Morsi sweeping authority to stop any "threats" to the revolution, public order or state institutions. The powers would last until the constitution is approved and parliamentary elections are held, not likely before spring 2013.

The decrees, said the Brotherhood spokesman el-Haddad, "cemented the way forward" by protecting the assembly and upper house.

In a series of Tweets, the Brotherhood dismissed the rallies, saying even while the square was packed that the turnout was "low" and showed a lack of support for the opposition.

Morsi's supporters canceled a massive rally they had planned for Tuesday in Cairo, citing the need to "defuse tension" after a series of clashes between the two camps since the decrees were issued Thursday. Morsi's supporters say more than a dozen of their offices have been ransacked or set ablaze since Friday. Some 5,000 demonstrated in the southern city of Assiut in support of Morsi's decrees, according to witnesses there.

The opposition says the decrees give Morsi near dictatorial powers by neutralizing the judiciary at a time when he already holds executive and legislative powers. Leading judges have also denounced the measures.

But many who joined Tuesday's protests lashed out more broadly against the rule of Morsi, who came to office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president. For months, criticism has been growing that Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists are monopolizing power in the government and trying to dictate the next constitution while not doing enough to tackle the country's multiple economic and security woes.

Reda Hassan, owner of a car parts shop, said he voted for Morsi in this past summer's election, but "he fooled us. He did nothing since he was elected. ... Now Tahrir says go away."

A fellow protester, Saad Salem Nada, said, "I am a Muslim and he made me hate Muslims because of the dictatorship in the name of religion. In the past, we had one Mubarak, now we have hundreds," referring to the Brotherhood.

On Monday, Morsi met with the nation's top judges and tried to win their acceptance of his decrees. But the move was dismissed by many in the opposition and the judiciary as providing no real concessions.

Morsi told the judges that he acted within his rights as the nation's sole source of legislation, assuring them that the decrees were temporary and did not in any way infringe on the judiciary, according to presidential spokesman Yasser Ali, who said the president had no plans to change or amend his decrees.

According to a presidential statement late Monday, Morsi told the judges that his decree meant that any decisions he makes on "issues of sovereignty" are immune from judicial review.

The vaguely worded statement did not define those issues, but they were widely interpreted to cover declaration of war, imposition of martial law, breaking diplomatic relations with a foreign nation or dismissing a Cabinet. Morsi's original edict, however, explicitly gives immunity to all his decisions and there was no sign it had been changed.

Monday's presidential statement did not touch on the immunity that Morsi gave the constitutional assembly or the upper chamber of parliament, known as the Shura Council. It also did not affect the edict that the president can take any measures he sees as necessary to stop threats to the revolution, stability or public institutions. Many see that edict as granting Morsi unlimited emergency powers.

The Shura Council does not have lawmaking authorities but, in the absence of the more powerful lower chamber, the People's Assembly, it is the only popularly elected, national body where the Brotherhood and other Islamists have a majority. The People's Assembly was dissolved by a court ruling in June.

On Tuesday, the influential Judges' Club, a sort of union led by an outspoken Morsi critic, vowed in a statement to escalate its resistance to the decrees. Judges and prosecutors in some parts of the country held a strike for a third day, leaving many courtrooms empty across the nation.

At climate conference, UN warns that thawing permafrost will cause increased global warming

DOHA, Qatar - Thawing permafrost covering almost a quarter of the northern hemisphere could "significantly amplify global warming" at a time when the world is already struggling to reign in rising greenhouse gases, a U.N. report said on Tuesday.

The warning comes as United Nations climate negotiations enter a second day, with the focus on the Kyoto Protocol ? a legally-binding emissions cap that expires this year and remains the most significant international achievement in the fight against global warming. Countries are hoping to negotiate an extension to the pact that runs until at least 2020.

The U.N. said the potential hazards of carbon dioxide and methane emissions from warming permafrost has until now not been factored into climate models. It is calling for a special U.N. climate panel to assess the warming and for the creation of "national monitoring networks and adaptation plans" to help better understand the threat.

In the past, land with permafrost experienced thawing on the surface during summertime, but now scientists are witnessing thaws that reach up to 10 feet deep due to warmer temperatures. The softened earth releases gases from decaying plants that have been stuck below frozen ground for millennia.

"Permafrost is one of the keys to the planet's future because it contains large stores of frozen organic matter that, if thawed and released into the atmosphere, would amplify current global warming and propel us to a warmer world," said UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner in a statement.

At the climate talks in Doha, Qatar, negotiations over Kyoto started on Tuesday. Many rich countries such as Japan, Russia and Canada have refused to endorse the extension, and talks are expected to be heated. The United States was the lone industrialized country not to join the original pact because it did not include other big greenhouse gas emitters like China.

In its current form, a pact that once incorporated all industrialized countries except the United States would now only include the European Union, Australia and several smaller countries which together account for less than 15 per cent of global emissions.

"We want to send a very clear message. We will not accept a second commitment period that is not worth the paper that it's written on," Asad Rehman of the Climate Justice Now! network told delegates. "We will not collude in a lie if that locks us into eight years of inaction and that condemns people and planet to a climate catastrophe."

The Japanese delegation defended its decision not to sign onto a Kyoto extension, insisting it would be better to focus on coming to an agreement by 2015 that would require all countries to do their part to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F), compared to preindustrial times.

"As we have been explaining, only developed countries are legally bound by the Kyoto Protocol and their emissions are only 26 per cent," said Masahiko Horie, speaking for the Japanese delegation.

"If we continue the same, only one quarter of the world is legally bound and three quarters of countries are not bound at all," he said. "Japan will not be participating in a second commitment period because, what is important, is for the world is to formulate a new framework which is fair and effective and which all parties will join."

The position of Japan and other developed countries has the potential to reignite the battles between rich and poor nations that have doomed past efforts to reach a deal. So far that hasn't happened, but countries like Brazil are warning that it will be difficult for poor nations to do their part if they continue watching industrialized nations shy away from legally-binding pacts like Kyoto.

"This is a very serious thing," said Andre Correa do Lago, who heads the Brazil delegation and is the director general for Environment and Special Affairs in the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

"If rich countries which have the financial means, have technology, have a stable population, already have a large middle class, if these countries think they cannot reduce and work to fight climate change, how can they ever think that developing countries can do it," do Lago said. "That is why the Kyoto Protocol has to be kept alive. It's the bar. If we take it out, we have what people call the Wild West. Everybody will do what they want to do. With everyone doing what they want to do, you are not going get the reductions necessary.

GWAR's Oderus Urungus Joins Cancer Bats Onstage for Cover of ...

Liz Ramanand, Loudwire

It still doesn?t seem real that Beastie Boys member Adam ?MCA? Yauch passed away earlier this year. As a part of one of modern music?s most definitive group, the man was an innovator of the highest order. There has been countless tributes paid to MCA since his death, and the latest homage was delivered with style by GWAR front-thing Oderus Urungus and current tourmates Cancer Bats, as they came together for a performance of the Beastie Boys classic ?Sabotage.?

GWAR and Cancer Bats are currently on the road with Devildriver and Legacy of Disorder on the ?Fate or Chaos? tour. We were lucky enough to see the tour?ourselves in New York, along with scoring a video interview with Oderus Urungus in the flesh. Tonight (Nov. 26), the ?Fate or Chaos? tour comes to an end in Millvale, Pa., but on Nov. 24 in Toronto, Oderus Urungus made a special appearance during Cancer Bats? set to perform ?Sabotage,? a song the band has been performing throughout the string of dates.

Along with a solid showing by the members of Cancer Bats, the voice of Oderus Urungus fit the song perfectly has he projected his trademark slimy yell. Believe us when we say the cover deserves an A+. Additionally, Sum 41 have been performing part of ?Sabotage? during their ?Does This Look Infected?? 10th Anniversary tour, which also deserves a mention due to its awesomeness.

Check out both memorial covers of ?Sabotage? in the videos below.

Surveillance Grid Moves Ahead With VoIP Spy Technology ...

Brandon Turbeville
AP

Once upon a time, privacy was not a word that was foreign to the English language. In that time long ago, police and governments would often have to manufacture an incident (like 9/11) in order to successfully push for more legal powers to monitor private conversations or access data without a warrant.

However, in 2012, the premise of the invasion of privacy is no longer necessary. Now, the debate itself is a foregone conclusion that agencies will be granted greater power to surveil the populace. The only question taken into consideration is what might be the best method that these organizations can utilize in order to take advantage of these coming powers.

Such is now the case with various Internet chat services like Skype and other companies or products utilizing Voice over IP technology, which law enforcement complains makes the task of eavesdropping on ?suspects?? communications much more difficult.

As explained by MassPrivateI in the article, ?Police want to covertly eavesdrop (spy) on voice over IP chats,? Voice over IP software allows for individuals to ?make phone calls over the Internet by converting analog audio signals into digital data packets.?

The article continues by stating,

Because of the way the packets are sent over the Web, sometimes by a ?peer-to-peer? connection, it can be complex and costly for law enforcement agencies to listen in on them. This has previously led some countries, like Ethiopia and Oman, to block VoIP services on ?security? grounds. In the United States and Europe, too, VoIP has given authorities a headache. The FBI calls it the going dark problem? and is pushing for new powers to force Internet chat providers to build in secret backdoors to wiretap suspected criminals? online communications.

In other words, law enforcement is irate that a technology exists that does not allow them to easily and illegally monitor the private conversations of American citizens. This, of course, ignores the fact that government technology is light years ahead of anything available to the average person. Thus, to believe that surveillance technology for VoIP software does not exist already is clearly naive.

Regardless, as is always the case when law enforcement and government claim they do not have enough sweeping power to ?keep us safe,? they are swiftly granted more.

In this case, however, it is the private sector (joined at the hip with the government, military, and intelligence agencies at the highest levels) that is rushing in to save the day. Specifically, Dennis Chang, President of Sun Valley-based company VOIP-PAL, has recently obtained patents to what has been termed a ?legal intercept technology? that would allow a host of government agencies to ?silently record? VoIP communications.

Predictably, Microsoft has also applied for a similar patent that would allow an agency to ?secretly intercept? communications via VoIP, amend the communications content, and store it. Although only recently announced to the public, the patent was filed as far back as 2009.

Chang?s VOIP-PAL patent was filed even earlier in 2007.

In the Microsoft patent, Patent Number 20110153809, it is stated that data that is linked with a request to establish a communication is ?modified to cause the communication to be established via a path that includes a recording agent.?

Among the possibilities of the types of modification that may occur during this process, ?adding, changing and/or deleting data within the data? are all potential methods of alteration.

After the data has been modified, it is then passed to a protocol entity which uses the data to establish a communications pathway than includes a recording agent which is then ?able to silently record the communication? according to the patent application.

Yet one should not be under the impression that this secret intercept surveillance technology is directed only at programs like Skype. As MassPrivateI writes,

The technology could allow the monitoring of conversations, voice messages and video conferences over a variety of devices, including smartphones, laptops and gaming devices.

. . . . . . .

Communications that can be intercepted may be conducted over computers, laptops, set-top boxes, programmable consumer electronics devices, personal digital assistants (PDAs), smartphones, gaming devices, printers, computing devices in automobiles and home media centers, the application states.

With this new technology, individuals can be identified by their usernames and subscriber data, as well as by billing records that can associate usernames with names and addresses. This would make not only calls available for easy interception, but also ?any other data streams such as pure data and/or video or multimedia data.?

Of course, it is now becoming well-known that governments and other militant privacy violators do not necessarily even need such technology. Nor do they even need the legal authority for access. This is because major companies like Skype have been notorious for easily surrendering users? personal data, even at times volunteering to submit the information to the requesting agencies. In a recent report by RT, it was described how Microsoft-owned Skype eagerly handed over the data of one of its users to a Texas-based intelligence firm.

Yet the legal authority to grind the boot of the state further into the face of American privacy is not being neglected either. Considering the recent announcement regarding the infamous Senator Patrick Leahy?s revision of a bill allegedly designed to protect American?s privacy into one that actually eviscerates privacy even more, there should be little doubt that the global surveillance control grid is moving ahead unabated.

In the end, the new VoIP surveillance software is yet one more block in the Berlin wall of surveillance and globalized control. As the Brookings Institution has already stated, the labor and cost needed to monitor, evaluate, and store every form of communication and data within the borders of the United States is minuscule when compared to other products.

With this in mind, anyone who believes those in control of these technologies are merely making wish lists for the future will find themselves both surprised and disappointed soon enough.

Banks offer loans, credit limit hikes to Sandy ... - Personal Finance

Multiple card issuers are offering victims of Superstorm Sandy credit line increases.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) ? In the wake of Superstorm Sandy, banks are offering short-term loans and emergency credit limit increases to many East coast residents. But before jumping on one of these offers, make sure you know what you?re getting into.

Citi (C, Fortune 500), Wells Fargo (WFC, Fortune 500), Bank of America (BAC, Fortune 500), Chase (JPM, Fortune 500) and American Express (AXP, Fortune 500) have been sending out e-mails and posting alerts on their websites, notifying credit card customers that they may qualify for special credit offers if they were impacted by the storm. And in certain cases, banks are being a little more lenient with their lending standards.

Citi is offering emergency credit line increases to its customers. If a Citi customer isn?t initially approved under the standard screening process, the bank will re-evaluate their account history to take into consideration ?storm-related consequences that may be out of the customer?s control,? a Citi spokeswoman said. And it will become the customer?s new credit limit going forward.

Bank of America customers will need to be creditworthy to qualify for a credit line hike, but each case will be determined on an individual basis, taking into consideration the storm?s impact. The new limit will also become permanent.

Related: More banks waiving fees in wake of Sandy

Meanwhile, Chase said some customers in affected areas can get credit line extensions even if they wouldn?t normally qualify, but the limit would revert to its previous level once they recovered from the storm.

Taking advantage of a credit limit increase isn?t a bad idea as long as you have a low interest rate and no cheaper options, said Odysseas Papadimitriou, CEO of credit card comparison site CardHub.com. But if your rate is high, the interest can really pile up. Instead, it may make better sense to apply for a new card with a promotional offer like a 0% interest rate for a certain period of time ? which are common heading into the holidays.

In addition to credit line increases, Wells Fargo is offering short-term loans to its customers. Its Direct Deposit Advance is advertised as a way to cover emergency expenses and costs $7.50 for every $100 borrowed.

Related: Superstorm Sandy donations top $11 million

However, short-term loans are rarely a good idea, said Papadimitriou. Likened to ?payday loans? by consumer groups, they carry steep fees that borrowers often can?t afford to pay back by the time the loan is due ? a date that typically coincides with their next paycheck.

When calculated over the average term of 10 days, APRs on these short-term loans typically run in the triple digits. The fee on Wells Fargo?s advance is lower than most, but its APR would still amount to a high 270% for a 10-day loan period.

?Even [getting a credit limit increase on] the highest credit card APR out there ? in the 40% or 50% range ? is going to be more attractive than a payday-type loan,? said CardRatings.com founder Curtis Arnold.

While both options may sound tempting if your house or car has just been flooded and you can barely pay the bills, remember to check with your insurance company to figure out what is covered first. And, of course, tap into any funds available from national or state disaster relief agencies, said Papadimitriou.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (known as FEMA), for example, will often cover rental payments for temporary housing when a storm victim?s home isn?t available. Grants are also available for home repairs and to replace household items that were destroyed. Other disaster-related expenses like medical, dental, funeral or transportation services, may also be covered by FEMA. To apply for assistance, go to DisasterAssistance.gov. You can apply by smartphone at m.fema.gov or call 1-800-621-3362.

Meanwhile, the Small Business Administration offers disaster loans of up to $200,000 with interest rates as low as 1.7% to homeowners needing to repair or replace homes damaged or destroyed by the storm. Loans up to $40,000 are available for homeowners or renters to repair or replace personal property that was damaged.

Many nonprofits ? like the American Red Cross ? are also offering free assistance to storm victims, including meals, shelter, and transportation. Banks offer loans, credit limit hikes to Sandy victims
