Vines and Steins had some great food and drink for a great cause ...

CAPS, which works with families and children in Elkhart County, had a fundraiser Friday night.

Charity auctioneer Neil Saffer took bids on some meals, some trips and a few elk.

And the event raised more than $400,000.

Business leaders from around Elkhart County gathered at the RV Hall of Fame to enjoy beer, including that from Iechyd Da, and wines from a number of local representatives.

Kurt Janowsky?s staff catered the event. The food included tuna (shown below), shrimp and grilled lobster tail. The food was great. The wines were good. And the hall was filled with around 400 people having fun.

A silent auction sold a number of items, including baskets of wine. But the live auction was pretty amazing. Giant etched bottles of wine, such as the one Dr. Bruce Newswanger is holding here, were sold for thousands of dollars.

The second item of the auction was a VIP dinner for 10 at Cafe Navarre, Janowsky?s restaurant. It sold for $7,000. A bit later, a seven-course Vietnamese dinner for eight sold for $8,000. Dzung and Francoise Nguyen, who invited my wife and I to the event, will host the people who paid $8,000. Dzung and Francoise, owners of Goshen Motors Inc., were among the co-chairs for the event.

Kurt and Ellen Janowsky donated a California wine trip. Bidding got hot and by the time it sold, the bidder paid $42,000 for a trip for eight. The Janowskys threw in two more trips for four and those sold for $20,000 and $25,000.

Bidding got hot on the elk too and they raised $42,000, $20,000 and $7,000.

Tim Portolese, Kim Cammenga, Janowsky and others in the community worked hard on the event to raise money for CAPS. And after all their work, CAPS has more money to help Elkhart County families work toward emotional health.

It's the way you tell em': Study discovers how the brain controls accents and impersonations

June 18, 2013 ? A study, led by Royal Holloway University researcher Carolyn McGettigan, has identified the brain regions and interactions involved in impersonations and accents.

Using an fMRI scanner, the team asked participants, all non-professional impressionists, to repeatedly recite the opening lines of a familiar nursery rhyme either with their normal voice, by impersonating individuals, or by impersonating regional and foreign accents of English.

They found that when a voice is deliberately changed, it brings the left anterior insula and inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) of the brain into play. The researchers also discovered that when comparing impersonations against accents, areas in the posterior superior temporal/inferior parietal cortex and in the right middle/anterior superior temporal sulcus showed greater responses.

"The voice is a powerful channel for the expression of our identity -- it conveys information such as gender, age and place of birth, but crucially, it also expresses who we want to be," said lead author Carolyn McGettigan from the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway.

"Consider the difference between talking to a friend on the phone, talking to a police officer who's cautioning you for parking violation, or speaking to a young infant. While the words we use might be different across these settings, another dramatic difference is the tone and style with which we deliver the words we say. We wanted to find out more about this process and how the brain controls it."

While past work has found that listening to voices activates regions of the temporal lobe of the brain, no research had explored the brain regions involved in controlling vocal identity before this study.

"Our aim is to find out more about how the brain controls this very flexible communicative tool, which could potentially lead to new treatments for those looking to recover their own vocal identity following brain injury or a stroke, " said Carolyn.

Tropical Storm Yagi is not expected to make landfall in Japan, but NASA satellite imagery showed that the storm was just south of the big island.

NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Tropical Storm Yagi on Tuesday, June 11 at 04:10 UTC (12:10 a.m. EDT/1:10 p.m. Japan local time) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument captured a visible image of the storm. The image showed that clouds associated with the northern fringes of the storm were draped over southeastern coastal Japan.

The MODIS image also revealed that Yagi has a long "tail" or band of thunderstorms feeding into the center from the south.

Multispectral satellite imagery shows tight bands of thunderstorms wrapping into the center of the storm, although the building of thunderstorms continues to weaken around the center. Vertical wind shear is starting to take a toll on Yagi, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Northwesterly wind shear has made a slight tilt to the system with the upper-level center displaced about 20 nautical miles east of the low-level center. When the lower and upper level centers of circulation are not "stacked," a tropical cyclone begins weakening.

At 09:00 UTC (5 a.m. EDT/6 p.m. Japan local time) Yagi had maximum sustained winds near 50 knots. Tropical storm force winds extend out 95 miles from the center, making the storm about 200 miles wide. Yagi was centered near 29.2 north and 136.9 east, about 307 miles west-northwest of Chichi Jima, Japan. Yagi was moving to the north-northeast at 17 knots. Yagi is kicking up seas with wave heights topping 21 feet, so the southeastern coast of Japan can expect rough seas until Yagi passes by.

Yagi is forecast to turn to the southeast and move away from Japan over the next couple of days, where it is expected to weaken and dissipate.

Plunging fish numbers linked to dam releases

June 11, 2013 ? A significant decline in the numbers of native fish in the Murray-Darling Basin may be linked to released dam water being too cold for breeding.

This is just one of the findings from a Griffith University led study which found current water releases back into the Murray-Darling system limit fish reproduction and therefore impact freshwater biodiversity.

Griffith University Research Fellow Dr Rob Rolls said the results, published in Freshwater Biology, throw cold water on the notion that large dam releases compensate for the effects of interrupting natural water flows. And it's not just seasonal flooding which is important; the natural low flow periods matter too.

"Golden perch an iconic species that significant value for recreational fishing and it is often assumed that large floods are necessary to initiate spawning and recruitment of golden perch and many other fish," Dr Rolls said.

"But we found that more than 90% of golden perch juveniles occurred in unregulated lowland rivers in the northern Murray-Darling Basin, which naturally stop flowing for weeks or months, while regulated reaches now flow constantly.

"Restoring these natural low flow periods is critical because it is these shallow, warm reaches of waterways which produce the food fish depend upon."

The team also found that releases from the Pindari Dam on the Severn River did not encourage fish spawning because the water is much colder compared with nearby unregulated rivers.

"Stream temperature has a significant effect on spawning opportunities for fish, and cold water released from the bottom of dams may limit the benefits of environment flows," Dr Rolls said.

"The negative impact of this could be minimised by modifying dams so the warmer water from the surface of reservoirs is released rather than from the bottom."

This research was undertaken in conjunction with the New South Wales Office of Water, the Queensland Government and the University of New England.

Gun control advocates mark 6 months since Newtown

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Six months after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, some of the victims' families are heading to Capitol Hill to remind lawmakers they are painfully waiting for action, while some of the president's allies are asking him to do more without any new prospects of legislation to toughen gun laws.

The lobbying visit Tuesday and Wednesday is one of several observances gun control proponents are planning for the half-year anniversary of the Dec. 14 massacre of 20 first graders and six staff in Newtown, Conn. The Sandy Hook families and other activists are keeping pressure on lawmakers to expand background purchases for firearm sales, despite Senate rejection of the measure in April and no indication votes have shifted.

Nicole Hockley, who lost 6-year-old Dylan at Sandy Hook, said their family's pain has only gotten worse as time goes by without the younger of their two sons at home. She says the fight for new laws, which they've also taken to several states, has left them emotionally exhausted, but they won't give up "no matter how long it takes."

"It is very disappointing that six months have passed, and although we are making progress in individual states, we aren't making progress on the federal level when it comes to background checks when an overwhelming number of Americans support it," she said in a telephone interview.

Gun control advocates also are anticipating further action from President Barack Obama, who said he would do everything he could to stem gun violence even without Congress.

The Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank with close ties to the White House, is asking Obama to issue a dozen more executive actions they say are within his power to reduce gun crimes. The group has been pushing those measures in meetings with the White House, where point man Vice President Joe Biden declared in an email to supporters Friday, "This fight is far from over."

Obama issued 23 executive actions in the aftermath of Sandy Hook and hasn't ruled out doing more. His aides say he isn't planning to announce any new initiatives or hold a gun-related event this week but will likely acknowledge the anniversary.

Arkadi Gerney, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, said their recommendations build on Obama's earlier actions with more specific measures to vigorously prosecute gun crimes. The center's suggestions include a system to alert local police when felons attempt to buy guns, allowing firearms dealers to run the same background checks on their own employees as they do for customers, penalizing states that don't provide mental health data to the background check system and confiscating firearms from domestic abusers.

Gerney said one recommendation grew out of the Boston bombing case, after the suspects reportedly scratched off the serial number on a handgun used in a firefight with police to prevent tracking. He says Obama's Justice Department could require manufacturers to place a second serial number inside the barrel or another hidden location.

"What you want is a whole series of laws that makes it harder for dangerous people to get guns and holds them accountable when they do get guns," Gerney said. "Most are about enforcing the laws that already are on the books and that's something the NRA and the gun lobby has said it supports."

But the National Rifle Association, which has successfully helped block any new guns laws, says it sees no further need for executive action. "The problem we have is lack of enforcement and lack of prosecution," said NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam.

Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, said there's plenty more that the president can do to stem gun violence. But he argued the most meaningful difference has to come from Congress passing a law to make the background checks that are currently required for sales in stores to apply to online and gun show purchases.

Glaze said his group is trying to pressure senators who voted against background-check legislation in April with television ads and a summer bus tour kicking off in Newtown on Friday, the six-month anniversary date, that is scheduled to travel to 25 states. Also, several groups are holding an event in front of the Capitol Thursday.

Democratic Senate aides said it was unlikely Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., would force a new vote on the background-check legislation unless he had the 60 votes needed to win or, at the very least, had more votes than previously.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said Friday that he hopes another vote will come yet this year and that the families' presence will help move it up on the agenda. Asked if he and other proponents have started collecting the additional votes they need, Blumenthal said, "I can't point to a senator who has reversed positions. But certainly my conversations indicate that they're thinking long and hard."

One aide suggested that senators would be likely to announce their decisions to switch together rather than doing it one at a time.

As they did in a lobbying trip this spring, the Sandy Hook families are trying to meet with lawmakers who have yet to commit to supporting background checks, but this time they also will meet with members of the House who have yet to vote on gun legislation.

"It might not be right now, but it will happen eventually," Hockely said. "It's not a matter of if, it's a question of when. We know Americans support this."

Other Sandy Hook families that plan to go on this week's lobbying trip are Mark Barden, father of Daniel; Nelba Marquez Greene and Jimmy Greene, parents of Ana; Neil Heslin, father of Jesse; Francine and David Wheeler, parents of Ben; and Bill Sherlach, whose wife, Mary, was the school psychologist.

Dem senator weighs changes to military prosecution

(AP) ? The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says Congress is considering stripping the military of its authority to prosecute sexual assault cases and shifting the responsibility to state prosecutors.

Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont told Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday that the status quo is unacceptable as the military deals with an epidemic of sexual assaults.

Leahy said members of his committee are considering taking this responsibility away from the military chain of command.

Hagel assured Leahy that changes will be made to deal with sexual assaults. He said a specially appointed panel would be meeting in two weeks to consider reforms.

Congress is moving ahead with several changes, including stripping commanders of the authority to overturn convictions for sexual assaults.

Simple theory may explain mysterious dark matter

June 10, 2013 ? Most of the matter in the universe may be made out of particles that possess an unusual, donut-shaped electromagnetic field called an anapole.

This proposal, which endows dark matter particles with a rare form of electromagnetism, has been strengthened by a detailed analysis performed by a pair of theoretical physicists at Vanderbilt University: Professor Robert Scherrer and post-doctoral fellow Chiu Man Ho. An article about the research was published online last month by the journal Physics Letters B.

"There are a great many different theories about the nature of dark matter. What I like about this theory is its simplicity, uniqueness and the fact that it can be tested," said Scherrer.

In the article, titled "Anapole Dark Matter," the physicists propose that dark matter, an invisible form of matter that makes up 85 percent of the all the matter in the universe, may be made out of a type of basic particle called the Majorana fermion. The particle's existence was predicted in the 1930's but has stubbornly resisted detection.

A number of physicists have suggested that dark matter is made from Majorana particles, but Scherrer and Ho have performed detailed calculations that demonstrate that these particles are uniquely suited to possess a rare, donut-shaped type of electromagnetic field called an anapole. This field gives them properties that differ from those of particles that possess the more common fields possessing two poles (north and south, positive and negative) and explains why they are so difficult to detect.

"Most models for dark matter assume that it interacts through exotic forces that we do not encounter in everyday life. Anapole dark matter makes use of ordinary electromagnetism that you learned about in school -- the same force that makes magnets stick to your refrigerator or makes a balloon rubbed on your hair stick to the ceiling," said Scherrer. "Further, the model makes very specific predictions about the rate at which it should show up in the vast dark matter detectors that are buried underground all over the world. These predictions show that soon the existence of anapole dark matter should either be discovered or ruled out by these experiments."

Fermions are particles like the electron and quark, which are the building blocks of matter. Their existence was predicted by Paul Dirac in 1928. Ten years later, shortly before he disappeared mysteriously at sea, Italian physicist Ettore Majorana produced a variation of Dirac's formulation that predicts the existence of an electrically neutral fermion. Since then, physicists have been searching for Majorana fermions. The primary candidate has been the neutrino, but scientists have been unable to determine the basic nature of this elusive particle.

The existence of dark matter was also first proposed in the 1930's to explain discrepancies in the rotational rate of galactic clusters. Subsequently, astronomers have discovered that the rate that stars rotate around individual galaxies is similarly out of sync. Detailed observations have shown that stars far from the center of galaxies are moving at much higher velocities than can be explained by the amount of visible matter that the galaxies contain. Assuming that they contain a large amount of invisible "dark" matter is the most straightforward way to explain these discrepancies.

Scientists hypothesize that dark matter cannot be seen in telescopes because it does not interact very strongly with light and other electromagnetic radiation. In fact, astronomical observations have basically ruled out the possibility that dark matter particles carry electrical charges.

More recently, though, several physicists have examined dark matter particles that don't carry electrical charges, but have electric or magnetic dipoles. The only problem is that even these more complicated models are ruled out for Majorana particles. That is one of the reasons that Ho and Scherrer took a closer look at dark matter with an anapole magnetic moment.

"Although Majorana fermions are electrically neutral, fundamental symmetries of nature forbid them from acquiring any electromagnetic properties except the anapole," Ho said. The existence of a magnetic anapole was predicted by the Soviet physicist Yakov Zel'dovich in 1958. Since then it has been observed in the magnetic structure of the nuclei of cesium-133 and ytterbium-174 atoms.

Particles with familiar electrical and magnetic dipoles, interact with electromagnetic fields even when they are stationary. Particles with anapole fields don't. They must be moving before they interact and the faster they move the stronger the interaction. As a result, anapole particles would have been have been much more interactive during the early days of the universe and would have become less and less interactive as the universe expanded and cooled.

The anapole dark matter particles suggested by Ho and Scherrer would annihilate in the early universe just like other proposed dark matter particles, and the left-over particles from the process would form the dark matter we see today. But because dark matter is moving so much more slowly at the present day, and because the anapole interaction depends on how fast it moves, these particles would have escaped detection so far, but only just barely.

The research was funded in part by Department of Energy grant DE-FG05-85ER40226.

Rwanda signs 4G internet deal with South Korea's KT Corp

By Jenny Clover

KIGALI (Reuters) - Rwanda on Monday signed a deal with South Korea's largest telecoms provider KT Corp to roll out high-speed 4G Internet to most of its citizens within three years.

Rwanda, a landlocked central African state and one of Africa's fastest growing economies,, has laid more than 3,000km of fiber-optic cable since 2009 in a bid to develop a service based economy and become a regional leader in information communication technology (ICT). Critics, however, say almost no large investor has come on board yet.

Rwanda's economy expanded by 9.4 percent in the 2011/2012 fiscal year but only around 8.3 percent of the population have internet access at the moment, according to Rwandan officials.

Rwanda said KT Corp will inject around $140 million into a joint venture company, which will be responsible for rolling out a fast 4G LTE broadband network to 95 percent of Rwandans. Debt and vendor financing will also be needed.

"This agreement with KT marks a major milestone in Rwanda's drive to become a modern, knowledge-based economy - and by expanding our information infrastructure, we will create jobs, support social progress and propel economic growth," Jean Philbert Nsengimana, Rwanda's Minister of Youth and ICT, said in a statement.

Rwanda said the government's equity investment in the joint venture, which has a 25-year term, would consist of using its national fiber optic cable, spectrum and wholesale-only operator license.

Kigali also invited other mobile network operators to invest in the project and provide retail access to 4G LTE wireless broadband services to some 12 million Rwandans.

Report: Iran sets up space monitoring center

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's media says that it has set up its first center to monitor objects passing in orbit overhead.

A Sunday report by the semi-official Irna news agency quotes Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi as saying the center will continuously track objects moving in space, and that it is ready to share data with other countries.

The report said President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was present at the inauguration of the center located near the town of Delijan some 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of Tehran.

Iran frequently announces technological breakthroughs that cannot be independently verified. It has long pursued space ambitions aimed at putting its own satellite into orbit and a manned space flight.

The U.S. and its allies worry that the same technology could also be used to develop long-range missiles.

90% Frances Ha

All Critics (84) | Top Critics (31) | Fresh (76) | Rotten (8)

The dialogue and editing are zippy and generally charming, combining with the tart observations of 20-something culture to create a nice frisson.

A black-and-white salute to the French New Wave (the score is borrowed from Georges Delerue, composer of many a Truffaut and Godard film) that manages to be very much of this moment ...

The movie's a love letter to an actress and her character, but by the end you may feel like an intervention is more in order.

The obvious love of New York City echoes Woody Allen at his best. But "Frances Ha" is very much its own film, a story of life and love and messy rooms.

Baumbach ... makes the film a celebration of Gerwig's coltish, goofball appeal.

Late-blooming 20-somethings have never been so perfectly captured -- and Gerwig has never been more appealing -- than in this funny, tender, life-affirming movie.

Gerwig, beyond a doubt, is immeasurably appealing, and Frances Ha is tailor-made to showcase her gifts better than anything she's ever been in.

...if you hold your nose and simply wallow through the stench of self-aggrandizement, you'll be rewarded with an experience that will actually tug on your emotions.

Frances Ha provides a sharp, fleet, and very funny look at female friendship and the acceptance of adult responsibilities.

This is very minimalist storytelling much of which feels improvised in front of the camera. The film is more of a character situation than a character story.

Frances Ha is endearing, kind and, in many ways, Noah Baumbach's best movie to date.

It's a film that bears all of the zingy dialogue and sharp characterizations of Baumbach's other films ("The Squid and the Whale," "Greenberg") but with more of a generosity of spirit towards its characters.

Funny and touching, Frances Ha may very well be the most eloquent take yet on a generation in flux.

The light Frances Ha provides skittish moments of heartbreak and confusion on the humorous path to adulthood, but it sends a comforting message that our fate may use the same language as our dreams even if it doesn't tell the same story.

Easily Baumbach's warmest and most upbeat film to date.

Mostly the movie is the best showcase so far for Gerwig's brand of lovely klutziness (and)a contemporary everywoman appeal that's impossible to dismiss, making Frances' self-absorption easier to swallow and tasty, too.

One of the most appealing films of the year to date -- and it may well end up being the most appealing indie release of the entire year

This is a tough one, but I must recommend it, if you are at all inclined to witness creativity at its unconventional best.

"Frances Ha"? More like Frances Bah!

Gerwig dances the Millennial Limbo

...caters to the Gerwig persona while also sanding off the edges of Baumbach's usual bitterness.

"Frances Ha" is about the inevitability of adulthood; it can be postponed, but it can't be avoided.

Obama outlines cyber problems for Chinese leader

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's national security adviser says the president described for China's leader the types of problems the U.S. has faced from cyber intrusions and theft of intellectual property.

White House national security adviser Tom Donilon gave no specifics but says Obama also underscored for Chinese President Xi Jinping (shee jihn-peeng) that the U.S. has no doubt that the intrusions are coming from inside China.

Donilon says Obama requested that the Chinese government "engage" on the issue and also understand that that type of activity is inconsistent with the kind of relationship U.S. desires to build with China.

Donilon addressed reporters Saturday after Obama and Xi concluded two days of meetings at a resort in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

The Most Contested Turf in Congress Isn?t Where You Think

Ron DeSantis dug into the batter?s box, his shadow stretching to the backstop in the morning light.

The first pitch was a fastball, although that?s a generous description. Even through his sun-squinted eyes, it must have resembled a beach ball as it floated to the plate. With an almost casual flick of the wrist and a twist of the hips, DeSantis sent it soaring. It traced a spectacular arc before landing over the fence?a good 320 feet from home plate?and coming to rest beside a sign that boasted ?Home of the Titans.?

The sign referred to the high school baseball team that plays at the Alexandria, Va., field?but to the Republican onlookers, scrimmaging a month before their annual congressional game against the Democrats, it felt like a portent. To this clutch of lawmakers in ill-fitting baseball pants and gut-hugging T-shirts, DeSantis wasn?t just a 5-foot-11 first-term House member from Florida, a man who in suit and tie looks like any of a thousand lawyer-lobbyists who clog the capital. He became a Titan of their very own.

And he has much to bear. His teammates view DeSantis as a solution to the problem that is Rep. Cedric Richmond, the young Democratic pitcher from Louisiana who is universally considered the best congressional baseball player in memory, and the reason the Republicans have been completely embarrassed in the past two contests at Nationals Park.

?I think we?ll call him the ?Ced-ric Slayer,? ? said Rep. Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania, as DeSantis trotted around the bases of the freshly manicured field. Rep. Jeff Duncan of South Carolina, also impressed, turned to one of his colleagues. ?I wanted to play the Darth Vader theme song when I came up to bat. But after that hit, I think maybe Ron should use it.?

It?s been a while since Republicans on Capitol Hill have had much to be excited about. Under the direction of Rep. Joe Barton of Texas?a manager who has been accused of abandoning free-market competition in favor of giving everyone playing time?the team has suffered a four-year losing streak. It hasn?t been fun. Most members of Congress already endure being backbenchers in the least productive and most despised institution in America. Add four humiliating defeats on a professional baseball field, and even the most self-assured members of society begin to doubt themselves.

Morale reached a nadir in 2011, a year that had looked good on paper. The tea party had swept dozens of new members into office, and the Democrats managed to elect only nine new faces to the House of Representatives. Unfortunately for the GOP, one of those rookies was the fearsome Richmond, a former starting pitcher for Morehouse College. In his first outing for the Dems, he pitched a complete-game one-hitter with 13 strikeouts. Last year, he fanned 16. The Republicans saw no end to that streak in sight.

But the 2012 elections brought them DeSantis, a former Navy officer who in 2001 captained the Yale baseball team. And now he was already the first GOP player ever to hit a ball out of this Virginia park, where the team has been practicing since having to leave its training site after an errant foul ball struck a teacher out on a smoking break.

Normally, a freshman from Florida would not be recognized in the halls of Congress, even by his colleagues. But prowess on the field trumps the furtive anonymity of legislating, thus making DeSantis one of the most popular new members in his caucus. Not a week goes by at the Capitol, he said, that he?s not stopped on the House floor or in the hallway to be asked about his arm or his swing.

The annals of sports are filled with names conjoined by epic rivalries: Magic and Bird; Ali and Frazier; Palmer and Nicklaus. For the most obsessed members of the congressional baseball teams?of which there are plenty?that list, they hope, could include Richmond and DeSantis.

?How serious do we take this?? asked Rep. Dennis Ross, a conservative from Florida with warning-track power. ?We?re up at 5:30 [every] morning, practicing for an hour and a half, for one game.?

He added, ?You won?t see a lot of these guys this serious in their other congressional duties.?

PAIN AND GAIN

Nobody comes to Washington to lose. The 535 members of Congress are some of the most competitive people in the world, and some of the more competitive of those suit up to play congressional baseball. It?s always been that way. It counts. So when Ross says his colleagues are putting the game ahead of other aspects of the job, he?s saying they are part of a century-old tradition.

In 1914, the contest between the parties made it impossible to get enough bodies on the House floor to debate a Civil War cotton-damage bill. House Speaker James Beauchamp ?Champ? Clark dispatched the sergeant-at-arms to retrieve a group of members from the field, but even with a quorum, the chamber adjourned without making progress on the bill: The members still had their heads in the game.

And it?s not just the players? work that takes a backseat to baseball; it?s their health as well. The first injury came two days before the first game in 1909, when Edward Vreeland broke his collarbone at practice, and recent examples abound. In 1994, Rep. Mike Oxley shattered his arm running into Sen. Sherrod Brown at first base; in 1996, Rep. Tim Holden collided mouth first with Rep. Bill Jefferson in foul territory, leaving tooth marks in his fellow Democrat?s forehead and sending them both to the emergency room; and in 2008, Rep. Louie Gohmert tore his ACL and meniscus on a play at the plate.

The game has such a storied history of injuries that Speaker Sam Rayburn of Texas discontinued the rivalry in 1958, saying it had gotten too physical. When play resumed in 1962, a new era dawned, one with true bragging rights at stake. Games would still be played only once a year, but three wins in a five-game series would earn the coveted Roll Call Trophy, so named after the Capitol Hill newspaper that sponsors the game. As it stands, Republicans have won 10 of these trophies, and the Democrats have won only three (the overall win-loss record is much closer, with Republicans having a 41-37 edge). Already with one win in the current series, and with a team that is arguably better than last year, the Democrats have designs on getting a step closer to their fourth trophy on June 13.

Larger version

So the game means perhaps as much as it ever has. Just ask Rep. Lou Barletta, a relief pitcher from Pennsylvania who lost 20 pounds in the offseason and works out with a former minor-league ballplayer each week when he heads back to his district.

Or watch Austin Scott barrel headfirst into home during practice, scoring with something that was one part slide, another part tumble. With his colleagues cheering him on, the Georgian brushed the dirt off of his red shirt and proclaimed, ?I hate to lose.?

SIZING THEM UP

When Rep. Mike Doyle, the current coach of the Democratic team, came to Congress from his Pittsburgh-area district in 1994, he was greeted by a peculiar question.

?I was standing in line to get my picture taken for my voting card, and someone comes up to me and said, ?Can you throw?? ? he recalled in his Capitol Hill office. These days, Doyle looks less the player and more the old-timey portly manager, sitting in his leather chair and flanked by two trophies and a glory wall of congressional baseball photographs. ?I said, ?Pardon me? Can I throw what?? ?

The question came from Rep. Martin Sabo, the party?s coach. He was on the prowl for players, a mission that felt very bizarre to Doyle. Not anymore. ?I couldn?t believe that the first question I was asked after getting elected was if I could play baseball,? Doyle said with a laugh. ?But now that I manage the team, any time there?s an election, my first question for any freshmen who looks at all athletic is, ?Can you throw?? ?

Naturally, it was the first thing he asked Cedric Richmond after he was elected in 2010. The answer made him giddy. This was a game Richmond has been mastering since he was a kid, growing up near a ball field in eastern New Orleans. Sports were always an important part of Richmond?s life, especially after losing his father when he was just 7 years old. His coaches became his role models, and he quickly excelled athletically. By the time he reached Morehouse College, Richmond was a five-tool baseball player, adept not only on the pitcher?s mound but also as a center fielder.

Unlike Doyle, Richmond was not taken by surprise when asked in Washington if he could play baseball. He knew it was coming. Even before arriving on the Hill, Richmond had heard from his predecessor, Rep. Bill Jefferson, about the game. Assistant Democratic Leader James Clyburn had even warned him not to ?go out there and embarrass us.?

?I knew it was serious,? Richmond said. ?So I got my behind to the gym to get in shape.?

When he took the mound for the first time at Nationals Park in 2011, it was clear that he was in a different league than his mostly potbellied rivals. With a fastball that topped 80 miles an hour, Richmond looked like he was tossing Lipitor pills. He took a no-hitter into the eighth inning.

?I?ve been involved with this game for 27 years, and he is the best player on either side of the aisle I have seen play in the time I?ve been here,? the GOP?s Barton said.

After that game, Republicans took the year to regroup. During the three months of practice leading up to the 2012 showdown, they invested in new pitching machines they could crank up to 85 mph to get used to Richmond?s speed. They also brought in some young hard-throwing staffers and a few former minor leaguers to toss batting practice.

Last year?s game fell on the same day the Supreme Court ruled to uphold President Obama?s health care law and the Republican-controlled House held Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt of Congress. ?We went to the game, and both sides had some victory that day,? Richmond said. ?So we went to the game and said, let?s break the tie right here.?

Republicans were ready for the fastball. So Richmond threw the curve. The Democrats won 18-5.

Barton was in need of some new players. And he was vocal about it, telling staff members at the National Republican Campaign Committee, ?Don?t be afraid to recruit some flat-bellies.? After becoming part of the NRCC?s Young Guns programs, DeSantis cruised to an electoral victory.

And while he knows he won?t be able to single-handedly tilt the score back in the GOP?s favor (he?s gone so far as to tell his teammates to donate money from their leadership PACs to support former major-league pitcher Jeff Suppan, if he decides to run in California), DeSantis is more than confident he can do his part. Compact and strong, with hands like baseball mitts, he says that in some ways he?s in better shape than he was during his college days.

?It was the steroid era back then,? DeSantis said in an interview in his office. He was in coat and tie, but his game-day jersey, a green Stetson University uniform, hung over his sofa. ?I wasn?t using, but I was lifting a lot of weights, and it wasn?t that good for my arm.?

Now, instead of benching 305 pounds, DeSantis does sets of more than 80 push-ups. As for whether he thinks he can hit Richmond, he says, ?I?m pretty sure whoever they put out there I?ll be able to hit. I was always the kind of hitter that if you threw it 92 miles per hour at me, I?d hit it right back at you.?

ROLE REVERSAL

That Doyle was willing to keep Richmond on the mound for two complete games speaks to the Pennsylvanian?s coaching style. He plays to win, even if that means some players don?t play. ?This isn?t Little League,? he says. ?I?ve got a bunch of prima donnas who think they have the right to play, but I make that decision.?

Here lies one of the great ironies of the game: While the Democrats only let you play if you?re good enough, the GOP?s Barton gives everyone a chance. One disgruntled Republican, who wished to remain anonymous out of fear that he might lose playing time, referred to Barton?s coaching style as ?socialist baseball.?

But don?t expect the coach to change his philosophy, even if his team has almost 30 players. ?It wouldn?t be right not to let everyone get some playing time,? Barton said in an interview in a congressional office noticeably bare of trophies. ?Imagine seeing your friends and family in the stands after the game and not having gotten to play. I don?t want some kid to look at one of my players and say, ?Daddy, why didn?t you get in the game?? ?

It may sound like the everybody-gets-a-ribbon rationale that Democrats use to argue for a social-safety net, but Barton has an ulterior motive for giving everyone playing time. ?Every one of my players has a voting card,? Barton said. ?You never know when I?ll need one of their votes.? It?s actually not clear whether he will ever need their votes: Barton was replaced as chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee in 2010.

And yet, these politics, whether real or imagined, often intrude. The first time DeSantis and Richmond faced each other wasn?t on the ball field. It was at a recent Judiciary Committee hearing featuring Holder.

With the four-hour hearing coming to an end, DeSantis and Richmond were two of the last remaining members. As DeSantis tried to tear Holder down, demanding to know where was the credibility and accountability in the various scandals plaguing the White House, Richmond sat just seats away calling for more decorum during the proceedings.

Days later, in an interview in the Speaker?s Lobby, Richmond implied that his first impression of DeSantis may act as motivation for him on the field. He even has some trash talk prepared.

?I might just say, ?Hey Ron, this one?s for the AG,? ? he said with a smirk.

DEALIN?

The day before DeSantis hit one out during the GOP practice, the Democrats held their own workout. They were in a good mood. It didn?t matter that their field in Northeast D.C. was lumpier than the Republicans? practice facilities, that a couple of homeless people slept on nearby benches, or that Rep. Dan Kildee had just pulled a calf muscle on a bumbling attempt to run down a fly ball. What mattered was that Richmond was on the mound.

Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut cut on and missed a fastball that Richmond threw at about three-quarter speed.

?Hey, Murph, you wanna use this bat?? Rep. Tim Bishop called out, holding up the smallest bat he could find in the dugout.

?Is that a woman?s bat?? Murphy asked. ?I?m OK.?

When Richmond let a fastball sail, flying over the catcher?s outstretched glove and rattling the backstop, Sen. Joe Donnelly, who was standing in the on-deck circle, looked to his colleagues and shouted, ?I?m gonna use my good helmet today!?

The team has had plenty to smile about. Chief among the reasons is the addition of Rep. Patrick Murphy, the 29-year-old who defeated tea-party icon Allen West in a Florida nail-biter.

Rumors have been swirling that he may even get to pitch (giving Richmond the chance to catch, and really get to trash talk), but it?s not clear how much the Democrats want to commit to him. On the one hand, he?s young enough that if he can play, he may be good for years to come. On the other, he is already considered one of the most endangered Democrats in the House. It means he may not work out for the team in the long term.

What?s sure is that Coach Doyle won?t let on what his plan is until game day. If congressional baseball is anything, it?s an exercise in deceit. Usually, it?s self-deceit: delusional grown men taking a game too seriously. But, sometimes, it?s a tool wielded to gain some sort of advantage.

?There?s always a misinformation campaign going on between the teams,? Doyle said. ?I?m hearing from my Republican friends that DeSantis might be hurt, or that he can?t really throw?but who knows. They could just be peeing down our leg.?

And while the game plan may be as difficult to pin down as one of the knuckleballs Richmond says he plans to feature this year (unless that, too, is just a ruse), one thing is sure. Doyle is not worried about the Republicans? Great White Hope.

?We have one player who can actually play baseball, and another who is just legend right now,? he says. ?Seeing is believing.?

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., as a former Navy SEAL.

It seems that many areas, such as Baltimore, Washington D.C. and parts of New Jersey have been spared, while others are positively overrun with the flying critters. It turns out that the cicadas have spent the last 17 years burrowing in rather sporadic clusters. If you have not seen any cicadas yet, chances are you won?t see them this time around, though it?s possible they may hit your area in 2021 when Brood X make their debut; this year?s crew is known as Brood II.

If your area is teeming with cicadas and the idea of a swarm of insects sends shivers down your spine, a little background knowledge can go a long way to take control of those emotions. Framing the event as a fascinating phenomenon for kids could help calm their fears and prevent lasting insect phobias.

So, what are cicadas anyway?

Cicadas are herbivorous, flying insects that grow to be about 0.75 to 2.25 inches long. There are over 1,500 species of cicadas around the world and more than 150 different species in North America. The particular species making headlines this spring is the periodical cicada, or Magicicada.

While many species of cicadas are present throughout the year, periodical cicadas spend the majority of their lives underground. This particular species surfaces only once every 17 years, for four to six weeks in a mad dash to mate. .

What?s all that racket?

Cicadas are best known for a high-pitched buzzing sound that males make trying to attract a mate. The din created by a swarm of cicada suitors can be highly distracting and downright annoying; however it can also be a useful prompt for families to explore the properties of sound.

Male cicadas have plate-like membranes on their abdomens that vibrate like the skins of drums. Young kids can experiment with vibration and sound by placing the palm of their hands on their throats while humming, plucking a rubber band, or rubbing a comb back and forth over different surfaces. Older children can explore how different vibrations produce different sounds.

Cicadas don?t initiate their telltale symphony right away. First they emerge from small holes in the ground, about 0.5 inches in diameter. Then they climb onto tree trunks and shed their exoskeleton before they are ready to mate. If the timing is right, you might witness a newly emerged cicada wriggle free from its old skin during its final stage of metamorphosis. If you miss it, don?t worry, you?ll likely find many discarded carapaces, for kids to collect and examine.

Adult cicadas take shelter in the treetops for about five days while they wait for their new skins to harden into protective exoskeletons. Then they begin their noisy mating rituals; and they are hard to miss. Having lived most of their lives underground, they are somewhat bumbling fliers and tend crash into people, windows, and other objects. If you get caught in a swarm of cicadas flitting about to find mates, it helps to remember?and remind kids?that they are harmless. If you can move indoors until they pass.

When no amount of humor can quell the annoyance factor, remember that cicadas play a vital role in the ecosystem. While living underground, they tunnel through the earth in search of plant roots to munch and help to aerate the soil. Their decomposing bodies and discarded exoskeletons help to replenish the natural nutrient cycle of the soil.

And if you just can?t take it anymore, remember that they?ll soon be gone for another 17 years.

A New Mission for 'Blind Side' Mom Leigh Anne Tuohy - US - CBN ...

NEW YORK CITY -- Leigh Anne Tuohy is a classy, no nonsense ball of energy, who first stepped into the spotlight as the hard driving mom in the blockbuster film "The Blind Side." Actress Sandra Bullock brought her big personality to the big screen and won an academy award.
????
The story was about the Tuohy family adopting a homeless teen who grew up to earn a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi and be drafted into the NFL. This year that same young man, Michael Oher, helped the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl.

Tuohy recently sat down with CBN News in New York City and described her family's story.

"It's really a love story and I hope the love story continues with family, after family, after family because there are Michael Ohers in every city in this country, and all they need is for someone to love them. There are a lot of people with a lot of worth and a lot of value and they just need an opportunity," she said.

New TV Series

The compassionate mom now leads a mission to deliver that opportunity to other foster homes with her new reality television series called "Family Addition."? The inspirational show airs Fridays at 9 p.m. (EST) on UP, formerly known as GMC television.??
?????????
In her conversation about the show Tuohy said, "We are one of these that unless what we do makes a difference, we really don't want to play in that sandbox. And we have been offered every TV show you can imagine. You name it, we have been offered it -- as a family and individually. They've wanted us to race, skip, jump, hop, everything you can think of, and that is just not who we are."

Tuohy calls the show a perfect fit for her family and the work it does with the Making it Happen Foundation. In each episode, "Team Tuohy" works to help families on the verge of adopting one or more of their foster children.?

The show also allows Tuohy to use her talents as an interior designer. It's a skill she showcased as a member of the design team for ABC's "Extreme Makeover Home Edition."??

"When you go into a family and they are just stretched just as tight as possible, financially, every way you can imagine, you would like to do something for them, that you leave a footprint that you were here and we believe in you and think what you are doing is right," Tuohy said.

"So every episode, thus far, we have tried to do something for the family to encourage them, to uplift them and let them know that 'Man you are doing the right thing. You are the hero. You are the one making a difference in this child's life," she said.

One Couple with a Big Heart

That is Tuohy's message to the Jackson family in one episode of the show. Shirdawn and Jeffrey Jackson have two children, but still opened their home to seven young siblings in California's foster care system.
????
"Shirdawn and Jeffrey are two of the most amazing people I have ever met," Tuohy told CBN News. "Every night when I lay my head on the pillow, still, I say thank you God for Shirdawn and Jeffrey Jackson because they have stepped up and made a difference."
?
But she explained that even the best guardian angels of orphans cannot change a mother with a hardened heart.

"There is this mother in LA who I am not going to lie -- if I meet her, potentially, I could do bodily harm to her," Tuohy said. "She just continues to birth these children. She is just 26 years old and she will do it again and they cannot take another child in."

"The last two kids she had, she walked out of the hospital and looked at the lady at the front desk and said 'You know who to call,' like it was the laundry or her dry cleaning. It's a human being," she said.

Tuohy is quick to point out the foster care picture can be painful and frustrating. At any given time there are more than 400,000 children in the system waiting for homes.

She said, "There is no one walking the streets who had it any tougher than my son, nobody. He was in 20 plus foster homes. He was one of 13 kids. I mean it was as bad as bad could get. And if someone like him, when you invest time and you love them, becomes so wildly successful, can you imagine who falls through the cracks that doesn't get help? And that keeps you up at night."

'We Can All do Something'

Foster care and adoption are significant issues in America, but they are manageable, according to Tuohy. She hopes "Family Addition" will inspire people to get involved.????

"Somebody has to be the voice of the kids. Do we think that God bestowed that message on us? He uses simple people to tell stories and he used our family who were just simple, every day, ordinary people to tell a story," she explained.

"Not everyone can go out and adopt a 6"6', 350-pound, African American man. He is hard to find clothes for and there are issues," she said.

But Tuohy strongly believes "we can all do something."

Samsung And Nokia Could Be Gearing Up For A Smartphone Camera War

s4zoomSo Samsung's Galaxy S4 Mini and Galaxy S4 Active have officially made the leap from unimaginative rumors to unimaginative reality, which leaves only one oft-rumored version of the popular smartphone left unaccounted for -- the curious S4 Zoom. As the name sort of implies, this Galaxy variant is said to blur the line between smartphone and camera, and we may now be getting our first look at the thing. A set of images from both SamMobile and TechTastic purportedly show off the photo-centric S4 Zoom ahead of a big Samsung press event in London later this month.

Facebook's new advertising flow could help attract small businesses

FBlogo300Facebook wants to simplify advertising and place the focus on the objective, not the method. The company announced Thursday that it is turning its advertising model around and going from 27 types of ad units to less than half of that, making the goal of the ad the first thing an advertiser sees, rather than a list of types of ads. While this may not benefit major brands that habitually spend money on Facebook, these changes to Facebook?s ad flow could mean that more small businesses enter the fray, now that some of the complexities have been eliminated.

Fidji Simo, Facebook?s product manager for ads, said that Facebook is uniquely positioned to get marketers? messages in front of the people who care about it. The company wants to make it easier for companies big and small to do that, so it is removing some of the barriers to entry.

When an advertiser wants to create a Facebook ad, Facebook will give them options for objectives. Since it?s hard for many marketers to immediately know the difference between a like ad and a sponsored story, Facebook wants to give advertisers a simple question ? ?What do you want to do?? Users can then select their objective, whether it?s to drive page likes, to gain more views for a video, to get more installs for their application or get more foot traffic.

There?s no set date for these changes, but Facebook told reporters Thursday that it should be in a couple weeks.

While a company previously may have used two or three types of ads to reach a goal, now Facebook wants to combine these methods and make it simpler.

42

This may not make a dent for companies who are used to advertising through Facebook, but it can be a godsend for small businesses and those who are just getting their foot in the door for Facebook advertising. This could be a way for Facebook to find newer advertisers by cutting back the complexity and putting the goal at the forefront.

Many small businesses may have been scared away by Facebook?s advertising options in the past, and this would be a way for Facebook to wean those kinds of marketers from simply clicking ?boost post,? to becoming more intimate with Power Editor and Facebook?s deeper advertising options.

Dennis Yu, the CEO of BlitzMetrics and a Facebook ads expert, emailed Inside Facebook about why these changes to the advertising flow are a positive move:

Facebook?s move to simplify the ad buying process is great for small business and those with simple goals. It?s not going to affect big brands and direct marketers, who need and use all the targeting and placement options available. But rather than focus on the ad buying process, Facebook will be able to really drive ROI (return on investment) for brands and e-commerce players by improving and automating how they create lookalike audiences and bid to conversions. Guys like us can certainly select thousands of interest and demo targets to find what converts at what price. But Facebook has the data to do it with further optimizations to optimized CPM on action specs and custom audience enhancements.

We fully believe Facebook will be successful here. Expect that the current batch of 3rd party Facebook ad software providers will feel some heartache, as customers will wonder why Facebook?s native product is better than theirs. Agencies will increasingly be taking a role in ad buying, especially in the mid-range market. So expect them to be more effective in using Facebook?s own tools, as opposed to 3rd party tools.

Facebook Strategic Preferred Marketing Developer SocialCode also thinks this is a good move for the site and those who advertise. CEO?Laura O?Shaughnessy issued a statement about the new developments:

We?re pleased to see the continued evolution of Facebook?s?advertising?offerings to best align with brands? overall marketing goals?said.?Campaign data shows that our own clients have already gravitated towards ad units that achieve larger business goals, including conversions or actions that result in quantifiable ROI. These goals are attainable through Facebook campaigns;?brands are looking for a streamlined and efficient approach to reach them. Facebook is a step ahead in recognizing this need and in placing a heavier focus on only those?advertising?solutions that deliver preferred results.

Readers: If you manage a Facebook page for a small business, does this make you more likely to advertise?
