Prison Planet.com ? Aspartame is linked to leukemia and lymphoma ...

Oct 31, 2012

As few as one diet soda daily may increase the risk for leukemia in men and women, and for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in men, according to new results from the longest-ever running study on aspartame as a carcinogen in humans. Importantly, this is the most comprehensive, long-term study ever completed on this topic, so it holds more weight than other past studies which appeared to show no risk. And disturbingly, it may also open the door for further similar findings on other cancers in future studies.

The most thorough study yet on aspartame ? Over two million person-years

For this study, researchers prospectively analyzed data from the Nurses? Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study for a 22-year period. A total of 77,218 women and 47,810 men were included in the analysis, for a total of 2,278,396 person-years of data. Apart from sheer size, what makes this study superior to other past studies is the thoroughness with which aspartame intake was assessed. Every two years, participants were given a detailed dietary questionnaire, and their diets were reassessed every four years. Previous studies which found no link to cancer only ever assessed participants? aspartame intake at one point in time, which could be a major weakness affecting their accuracy.

One diet soda a day increases leukemia, multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphomas

The combined results of this new study showed that just one 12-fl oz. can (355 ml) of diet soda daily leads to:

- 42 percent higher leukemia risk in men and women (pooled analysis)
- 102 percent higher multiple myeloma risk (in men only)
- 31 percent higher non-Hodgkin?lymphoma risk (in men only)

These results were based on multi-variable relative risk models, all in comparison to participants who drank no diet soda. It is unknown why only men drinking higher amounts of diet soda showed increased risk for multiple myeloma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Note that diet soda is the largest dietary source of?aspartame (by far) in the U.S. Every year, Americans consume about 5,250 tons of aspartame in total, of which about 86 percent (4,500 tons) is found in diet sodas.

Confirmation of previous high quality research on animals

This new study shows the importance of the quality of research. Most of the past studies showing no link between aspartame and cancer have been criticized for being too short in duration and too inaccurate in assessing long-term aspartame intake. This new?study solves both of those issues. The fact that it also shows a positive link to cancer should come as no surprise, because a previous best-in-class research study done on animals (900 rats over their entire natural lifetimes) showed strikingly similar results back in 2006: aspartame significantly increased the risk for lymphomas and?leukemia in both males and females. More worrying is the follow on mega-study, which started aspartame exposure of the rats at the fetal stage. Increased lymphoma and leukemia risks were confirmed, and this time the female rats also showed significantly increased breast (mammary) cancer rates. This raises a critical question: will future, high-quality studies uncover links to the other cancers in which aspartame has been implicated (brain, breast, prostate, etc.)?

There is now more reason than ever to completely avoid aspartame in our daily diet. For those who are tempted to go back to sugary sodas as a ?healthy? alternative, this study had a surprise finding: men consuming one or more sugar-sweetened sodas daily saw a 66 percent increase in non-Hodgkin lymphoma (even worse than for diet soda). Perhaps the healthiest soda is no soda at all.

New findings on men's genes could alter interpretation of PSA test

ScienceDaily (Oct. 30, 2012) ? By studying a specific part of the male DNA, it may be possible to refine the interpretation of PSA tests. This would reduce the risk of men being treated for prostate cancer unnecessarily.

The findings have been presented in a thesis by Christel Bj?rk at Lund University, Sweden, who has carried out the study with her colleague Hannah Nenonen, supervised by researcher Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman.

A PSA test measures the level of PSA (prostate-specific antigen) in the blood, and raised PSA can signal an increased risk of cancer; however, this is not the case for everyone. The problem is that there is no good way to separate those with naturally high levels of PSA from those at increased risk of prostate cancer.

"If we know that a man has a naturally high level of PSA, this can be taken into account in a PSA test, and the patient may be able to avoid arduous treatment with a risk of side-effects," says Christel Bj?rk, a doctoral student at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

The present study shows how a man's genetic characteristics can affect the androgen receptor, a protein that has an important function in the male reproductive system. It regulates the effect of testosterone and controls production of prostate-specific antigen.

The researchers studied healthy men in different age groups and discovered a connection between PSA levels in the blood and DNA structure of the androgen receptor. The highest PSA levels were found in the men with the most common variant of the androgen receptor, i.e. the largest group of men.

"Both the PSA level and the genetic characteristics can be identified with a blood test," says Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman, Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Sciences, Lund University.

The study is based on samples from around 400 men from Sweden and Norway. Before the results can be implemented for PSA tests in the health service, the study must be repeated on a larger group.

"We have access to material covering around 3 200 men from seven European countries and the idea is to investigate whether our preliminary findings can be verified on this group in the near future," explains Yvonne Lundberg Giwercman.

Ugandan Woman Brings Computing to the Rural Masses (Video ...

From the moment she got her first taste of computing, Uganda?s Asia Kamukama knew that she wanted more of her people to get their hands on this.

Fast-forward a few years, and she helps run Maendeleo Foundation, an organization that does just that ? bringing a solar-powered mobile computing lab to rural villages. The effort brings together about 15 Intel Classmate PCs, along with the solar panels needed to power the machines.

Now her project is also working to leave some of the computers behind in schools and libraries to give more permanent computing access to those she visits.

Kamukama has had to overcome some obstacles in her life.

She was one of few girls in her school, and didn?t really get to use a computer until she was 22 and nearly finished at university. But it wasn?t until she flew to New York this week that she had to deal with a hurricane.

But even after traveling more than 23 hours to D: Dive Into Mobile ? and seeing the event washed out ? Kamukama kept a smile on her face. After relocating to higher ground, she sat down with AllThingsD?s Ina Fried to tell the story she would have told onstage, as one of several participants in a conference segment called Global Voices.

Interview With Denise Richards - Career, Motherhood, Body Image ...

I spent the afternoon in New York last week with long distance friend, mom, and actress?Denise Richards. We chatted over tea and scones, and then I decided to ask her some questions and find out what it?s like to be a single, working mom in the spotlight.

Denise was candid, honest and sincere about her life. I give you, our interview?

ED ? Denise, can you tell us a little about your upbringing. Did you know from a young age that you wanted to be an actress? When and how did you get that lucky break?

DR ? I grew up in a small town outside outside of Chicago. I grew up very differently than how my girls are growing up today. My mom was a stay at home mother. We were actually a Nielsen family ? we were your all around typical American family. Family of 4. Very close. My father, my sister and I were part of a father-daughter group called The Drifters. My mom had dinner on the table every night at 6 o?clock. Everything was about family growing up.

From a young age, I knew I wanted to act. But growing up in a small town, I didn?t think it would be possible living in Illinois. My dad was tired of working outdoors in the cold winters, and decided to move us to California. From there, I started modeling, then getting into acting. I started taking acting lessons, and landed a few guest spots. I was lucky- I was able to support myself even with those little jobs.

My big break was?Starship Troopers ? it was so cool. My first movie in a movie theater! From there on in, I became a working actor.

Denise Richards, Starship Troopers

ED ? Breaking into Hollywood can be an uphill battle. Were there ever moments where you felt as though your dreams were impossible? How did you stay positive and motivated in your career?

DR ? There?s always that little word called REJECTION. It happens to everyone. There were many times that I got discouraged when I didn?t get a role, but I loved what I was doing so much, it was this love that kept me motivated. I had a passion for acting, and I wouldn?t give up.

To this day, I love being on set with filmmakers, the actors, the crew. I love working. It has always been my passion that has kept me motivated through rejection. When you have a passion for something, you MUST keep at it. It sounds very simple, but I know it to be true.

ED ? What does being a single woman and mom mean to you? What advice can you offer to other single, working moms when life gets overwhelming? How do you balance it all?

Denise Richards and daughters Sami, Lola and Eloise (c/o People Magazine)

DR ? I think moms, single or not, put a lot of pressure on ourselves trying to balance it all. It?s NEVER going to be perfectly balanced- the sooner you know this, the sooner you can relieve some of the pressure you put on yourself. When you?re working, you will miss some moments with your kids. When you?re away with your husband, you?ll miss some moments at work. When you?re with the kids, you?ll miss moments there too. I think it?s about prioritizing, not about balancing. It?s more about juggling, in my opinion, than balancing. Keeping things running as smoothly as possible, and managing all those balls in the air as best as you can.

The secret to balance for me, is about living and being in the moment. Otherwise you?re simply never enjoying life ? when you?re with your kids, you?re worried about work, and so on.

About being a single mom- I don?t think of myself as a single mom. I just think of myself as a mom. I think even if you have a nanny (depending on your financial situation), or grandparents to help out, at the end of the day, you?re the one raising your kids. And that?s a tough job. My children are my priority and I want to be the one raising them. The best gift you can give your child is your time. We don?t get these moments back. When my girls were babies, there were incredible jobs that I didn?t take, because I didn?t want to miss all those moments. Life is always about making choices.

ED ? You are known world-wide as a sex symbol, and you?ve been ranked as one of the most beautiful people alive. How do you deal with such close scrutiny of your body? Describe your relationship with your body and with food, and do you have any tips for staying in the shape that you?re in?

DR ? I have been lucky enough to be thin my whole life. But I take good care of myself and I think clean living makes a difference. I?m careful what I put in my body, I try and stay out of the sun. I?m lucky that I didn?t feel the pressure to be thin in this business- I can probably credit good genes for that.

But, after my mom passed away, I gained 10-15 pounds, which was a lot for my frame. And I think it was TMZ that posted my weight gain (it was splashed all over the Internet), and I was shocked! I had never experienced such scrutiny and cruelty about my body. The tabloids had no idea everything that was going on in my life, and it was really mean, and very hurtful. ?I try to never read things in the media, ?but ?Oh look at fat Denise,? was difficult to read.

During this grieving period, was the first time I experienced emotional weight gain. I don?t even think I changed my eating habits- the weight just stuck to me ?cuz I was so grief-stricken?over losing my mom. But after some time, I decided to buckle down? I wanted to feel better emotionally and get back to the way I looked physically, so I started getting back into my pilates routine, and being really consistent. I started to feel better.

My secret to staying in shape is consistency. When I consistently stick to my routine, that is when I feel my best. I also think you need to work out for your own body. Just because something works for someone else, doesn?t mean it will work for you. So I believe you should continue to try different activities until you find out what works for you. I have tried everything out there you can imagine- weights, classes, everything, and for me, the best thing my body responds to is pilates.

ED ? Your marriage and divorce with Charlie Sheen were plastered all over tabloids for months and you endured invasive prying by the press into your personal family life. How did you maintain your sanity during this ordeal?

Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen

DR ? I maintained my sanity by knowing what?s important, and what was important was taking care of my two babies. I knew over time it would pass. It didn?t pass as quickly as I would have liked (laughing), but I knew I had to stay focused on really blocking a lot of that stuff out and being the best mom I could be.

My kids were too little to understand what was going on during my divorce, which was a blessing. They were babies. It was all about being a mom and being there for them.

?

ED ? What is your advice to other women who find themselves in a toxic relationship? It is not as easy as it seems, to just get up and walk away from the family unit. Women sit on the fence for months, often years before leaving a toxic relationship. Can you touch on this?

DR ? I think the advice I would offer to women contemplating leaving their partner, is to answer these 2 questions- Would I want this partner for MY daughter? ?And would I want MY son to grow up and be like this person? If you answer no to these questions, then he is not the right person to continue on with.

About drawing the strength to leave your marriage, that is so different?for every person. Everyone?s situation is different. It?s so personal for each individual and no one should judge a friend or another woman, and say things like, ?She should leave her husband immediately,? or ?I can?t believe you lived miserably in that marriage for so long.?

I always say, we don?t know what goes on behind closed doors, and we don?t know the ins and outs of anyone?s relationship except the people involved. All we can hope for, is great support around us, and support to get us through whatever decision we choose to make.

?

ED ? You speak often of your great love and respect of your mother, who passed away too young from cancer. What was the best life advice that you received from your late mother?

DR ? She gave me all kinds of advice. She gave me advice on how to be a mom, advice in my career. But I think her best advice she ever gave me was the importance of living in the moment. The gift that comes with being in the moment. And she herself always lived like that. She was always that way. I also think it?s really good advice, because when you let your mind wander to the past or the future, you?re not present. You?re not there. It?s as if you didn?t experience that moment. You end up missing a lot of wonderful moments.

ED ? Tell us, what are you working on at the moment in your career? And for a woman looking to break out into the media today (you were ?a Bond girl, my goodness), what advice would you give her?

Denise Richards in James Bond The World Is Not Enough

DR ? I just finished the 100th episode of 90210 which was fun, and?I?m now filming a new?tv pilot called Socio.

For anyone looking to break into the business, I think many underestimate the importance of hard work. Rejection and roadblocks are part of the job, but if you believe in yourself, nothing will replace that ?pick yourself up, and dust yourself off? attitude, and work ethic. If this is truly what you want to do, and if it?s your dream, then never give up and keep at it. But that goes with anything in life when pursuing your career ? keep plugging away.

Denise Richards on Charlie Sheen's new sitcom Anger Management

ED ? What inspired you to choose to adopt your youngest daughter? Three daughters! What is that like, a house full of girls? In fact, you?re an avid animal adopter and rescuer too. What is it about your need to rescue? My psycho babble is showing its face. ;)

DR ? I just knew I wasn?t done. And I have always wanted to adopt. I decided to pursue it on my own? I just knew that my family wasn?t complete. I think that children choose their parents- and Eloise just found me a different way. I can?t explain it. I just knew there was another soul for me.

We didn?t know she was a girl until three weeks before she was born. So, we weren?t sure if Eloise was going to be a girl or a boy. My sister has three boys, so it was so delightful to find out that I was having another girl. To have a house full of girls is the best, and I love it.

As for the animals, I have no idea where that came from. Ever since I was little, ever since I can remember, if there was a stray dog, I would bring it home and care for it, and try and find its owner. My sister is the opposite- she doesn?t have any animals. I gravitate toward the ones who are in special need of care, who have been abused, and who need medical attention.

And again, back to the adoption, there is no difference in me giving birth or adopting. AT ALL. I feel like I gave birth to Eloise.

ED ? And finally, if you could offer your twenty-year old self advice, what would you tell her?

I would tell her not to sweat the small stuff in life. That everything in life has a time and place, and not to be in such a rush to do everything. There is beauty in taking your time, and enjoying each stage and phase.

?

Feel free to leave Denise a comment or questions. She will be reading.

And to all the people who have been affected by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy (including Denise who is in New York at the moment), my thoughts and prayers are with you.?

My Special Child: Man Proves Life Down Syndrome Can be - Fox 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? In America, the abortion rate for a prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome has dropped to 67 percent, according to a study released earlier this year by the National Institute of Health. Yet many people argue that 67 percent is still too high.

In honor of Down Syndrome month, this ?My Special Child? report, reminds us that many people with Down Syndrome can complete high school, attend college and be gainfully employed.

Though Lee Jones has Down Syndrome he?s been making great accomplishments since he was just a little boy. It?s a message he wants these medical students to hear.

?Everyone, whether they have a disability or not have the right to have their own dreams, just because a person has a disability doesn?t lessen the importance of their dreams,? said Jones.

Lee learned to read at the age of three, was developing athletically by kindergarten, he graduated from high school, then from college with a bachelors degree. Today Lee lives on his own and works two jobs, including one at the Kauffman Foundation.

?I pass out mail, I know people really well so, I interact with them when I do that, then I do photocopying, mailing, scanning,? Jones explained.

Lee attributes his accomplishments to his personal determination and realistic goal setting. He also attributes his parents? relentless commitment to his learning which was done with many small steps.

?I did my own laundry when I was in middle school at home,? he said.

Many times it was Lee who was setting the goals, like learning to drive and learning to scuba dive, and yes, it was much harder for Lee.

?We were studying for an algebra test in high school and Lee and I were both to about the breaking point, and he said ?Mom don?t you realize this is hard for me?? And I said sure,? Carolyn Jones, Lee?s mother, said.

It may have taken Lee longer to learn, but today, he?s far from being a burden on society.? He works, he volunteers, and he is teaching the rest of us what people with down syndrome CAN accomplish.

October is Down syndrome month. For more information, resources and success stories visit the National Down Syndrome Society?s website at www.ndss.org

Obama, Romney Reaffirm Support for Israel in Final Debate

In the third and final head-to-head debate of the United States presidential election the Republican and Democratic candidates each attempted to out-support the other in dealing with Israel.

Both sides of the "debate" were in agreement on Israel
Both sides of the "debate" were in agreement on Israel

President Barack Obama has stated time and again that the United States has a ?rock solid? commitment to the security and integrity of Israel. His Republican opponent has built his entire foreign policy credential on steadfast support of Israel.

During their final presidential debate the two men exchanged anecdotes and examples of how supportive they have been and will continue to be.

President Obama recalled his trip to Israel in 2008 and the airtight nature of intelligence cooperation between the Israeli and American intelligence communities. The president spoke of upcoming joint-exercises that will be the largest such demonstration of military cooperation ever held by the two nations.

President Obama discussed his phone call with Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi, during which he outlined a clear red line for American support of Egypt?s fledgling democracy. The Muslim Brotherhood must unflinchingly maintain the peace agreement signed in 1979 by Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin.

President Obama stated that his administration gauges its interests and involvement in Syria from an Israeli-centered viewpoint. The Obama administration?s support of rebel groups during the conflict, and potential support for whatever government emerges from the conflict, will hinge on a commitment to look after Israeli concerns. The desires of the Syrian people would only be met after guaranteeing a favorable situation for Tel Aviv.

Mr. Romney, to his credit, largely spent the evening agreeing with President Obama?s current policies and stated goals. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has endorsed the former governor?s presidential bid. Mr. Romney promised that his close friendship with Prime Minister Netanyahu would create even tighter bonds between Washington and Tel Aviv ? not to be outdone, vice-President Joe Biden has spoken many times of his close friendship with ?Bibi? going back several decades.

Mr. Romney, rather than differing with the current administration, is convinced that he will simply do things ?better? and faster. His promise to America was that if Israel should decide to attack Iran he would be the first to know and fall in line behind them.

When the two men discussed Israel not a single word was uttered regarding the plight of Palestinians or the threat that Israel presents to its neighbors.

In the media coverage of the event not a single major American news agency discussed the siege conditions in Gaza or the West Bank. There was no mention of the nearly two hundred illegal settlements, the theft of resources, or the harassment and killing of civilians by members of the Israeli military or settler groups.

President Obama certainly expressed a clearer understanding of the diplomatic conditions and political situations in the Middle East and North Africa than his opponent, but both men remain ardent supports of Israel. The United States remains committed to continuing its unwavering backing of Tel Aviv.

Washington should be expected to continue delivering billions of dollars each year to the Israeli military and government as they tighten their grip over occupied Palestine.

Monster Energy Drinks Linked To Deaths???

Monster Energy drink tastes like someone sprayed a bunch of batteries with apple juice and then melted it all down and shoved it in a can. It's also got enough caffeine to give a killer whale a hernia. And now, according to the FDA, they might actually kill you.

monster kill drink
The fact that these creatures burst out of Monster when you open the can may have something to do with it.
(source)

The New York Times is reporting 5 cases of death related to Monster Energy Drinks between 2009 and 2012. Generally the reports indicate that the drinks are essentially suspects in a rash of unlikely heart failures around the time the drinks were imbibed. Monster energy drink claims that they have heard of no deaths related to their drinks. But then it's hard to trust a company that makes their drinks out of monsters.

main ingredient
When you drink Monster energy drink, this is who you're drinking.
(source)

It's hard to believe that anything bad could happen drinking drinks made by a company that makes such drinks as "Monster: Rehab," "Monster: Assault," and "Monster: Heavy Metal." Other drinks the company plans on marketing include "Monster: War Without End," "Monster: Crimes Against Humanity," and "Monster: XXXtreme ToTAL GenOCIDE now WITH LIME"

To be fair to Monster, they've really gone to a lot of trouble to make the can look like it's filled with things that can kill you.

Generally speaking, according the NY Times article, FDA reports usually are mere indicators of a larger trend. Meaning that five deaths in an FDA report means chances are there are a much larger number of unreported cases out there. So it is a risk to consume Monster, or any other energy drink with enough caffeine in it to make a cow fart it's own organs out. However, though Monster may have a low percentage chance of killing you, there was an FDA report last year that drinking Monster energy drink has a 100% chance of making you really good at moto cross. So it might be worth the risk.

Hurricane Sandy pounds Jamaica, then aims at Cuba

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) ? Hurricane Sandy's howling winds and pelting rains lashed precarious shantytowns, stranded travelers and downed power lines Wednesday as it roared across Jamaica on a course that would take it on to Cuba and then possibly threaten Florida and the Bahamas.

Sandy's death toll was at least two. An elderly man was killed in Jamaica when he was crushed by a boulder that rolled onto his clapboard house, police reported. Earlier Wednesday, a woman in Haiti was swept away by a rushing river she was trying to cross.

In some southern towns on Jamaica, a few crocodiles were caught in rushing floodwaters that carried them out of their homes in mangrove thickets, showing up in districts where electricity was knocked out, local residents reported. One big croc took up temporary residence in a family's front yard in the city of Portmore.

By Wednesday evening the hurricane's eye had crossed Jamaica and emerged off its northern coast near the town of Port Antonio, meteorologists said, but rain and winds continued to pound the Caribbean island, and hurricane conditions were predicted to last well into the night.

It was the first direct hit by the eye of a hurricane on Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert 24 years ago, and fearful authorities closed the island's international airports and police ordered 48-hour curfews in major towns to keep people off the streets and deter looting. Cruise ships changed their itineraries to avoid the storm, which made landfall five miles (8 kilometers) east of the capital, Kingston.

Flash floods and mudslides were a threat for this debt-shackled tropical island of roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, which has a crumbling infrastructure and a number of sprawling shantytowns built on steep embankments and along gullies that sluice runoff water to the sea.

In the hilly community of Kintyre, on the outskirts of Kingston, Sharon Gayle and a few of her neighbors expected to completely lose the town's bridge over the Hope River, which washed away a section of the span just three weeks ago during a heavy downpour. The shell of a concrete home that collapsed into the river and killed two people several years ago still lies toppled on the sandy banks.

"I'm really nervous. We're trying not to show it in front of the children though," the mother of three said, huddling under a sopping white towel as she stared at the rising river.

The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was expected to pass over eastern Cuba early Thursday, missing the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, where pretrial hearings were being held for a suspect in the deadly 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole off Yemen.

Cuban authorities issued a hurricane watch for several provinces. A hurricane watch was issued for the central and northwestern Bahamas, where the storm was predicted to pass Thursday and Friday morning.

Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said tropical storm conditions were possible along the southeastern Florida coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the area, the center said.

In southwestern Haiti, a woman died in the town of Camp Perrin after she was swept away by a river she was trying to cross, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, head of the country's civil protection office. There were reports of extensive damage to Port Salut on Haiti's far-southwestern coast after a river burst its banks. Mayor Larock Pierre Clervert said a hotel was destroyed by flood waters.

Across Jamaica, the poor in slums and moneyed residents in gated communities hunkered down at home as powerful winds shrieked around buildings and sent sheets of rain sideways. Many homes were lit by candlelight and lanterns since tens of thousands of power utility customers were without electricity.

Stranded business travelers and a smattering of locals rode out the Category 1 hurricane in hotels clustered along a strip in Kingston's financial district. Some read prayer books or novels, while others watched movies or communicated with loved ones on computers.

Cris Hopkinson, a Toronto woman who was on a business trip, said she hoped to catch a flight off the island Friday once the stormy weather cleared.

"For now, I'm just hoping that the glass in the windows doesn't shatter from the winds," Hopkinson said in the dining room of the Courtleigh Hotel.

About a mile away in the rough neighborhood of Grants Pen, where shops have been ransacked in the past during storms, a number of young men ignored the curfew, riding on bicycles or walking in small groups in the steady rain.

Cecile Graham, a mother of two teenagers, said she was worried about the possibility of burglaries or looting at the small markets and shops that line the main road.

"I hope that all the police are out and we won't have the looting that has taken place before," she said.

Police slowly drove through drenched communities in the coastal capital with their cruisers' lights flashing. A senior police superintendent was shot in troubled West Kingston, but the circumstances were murky.

The storm was predicted to drop as much as 12 inches (25 centimeters) of rain, especially over central and eastern parts of Jamaica, the country's meteorological service said. Some isolated spots could see as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters), according to U.S. forecasters. Sea water washed over the streets of southern coastal towns like Port Royal, a depressed fishing village at the tip of a spit of land near Kingston's airport.

More than 100 fishermen were stranded in outlying Pedro Cays, a lobster- and conch-rich area about 40 miles (66 kilometers) off Jamaica's southern coast that was the first area of Jamaica to get Sandy's winds and rain. Some of them told local media they lacked fuel to get back to the mainland, but authorities said they willfully disobeyed an evacuation order.

On the mainland, over 1,000 people moved to shelters, but others living in low-lying areas on the mainland refused to evacuate their homes because they were fearful that their possessions would be stolen.

Airports in Kingston and Montego Bay shut down for the day and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced that its Allure of the Seas megaship would not stop at Jamaica's northern Falmouth terminal on Wednesday, remaining at sea instead. Other cruise lines also rerouted ships from port calls to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

While Jamaica was ravaged by bands from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and other powerful hurricanes centered offshore, the eye of a hurricane hasn't carved across the island since Gilbert in 1988, Jamaican meteorologist Jacqueline Spence said.

By Wednesday evening, strengthening Sandy was a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (135 kph). It was moving north at about 14 mph (22 kph). Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the center.

Far out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Tony posed no threat to land. The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 25 mph (41 kph). Its center was 1,060 miles (1,705 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.

Tattoo of the week: English major's tattoos represent literary love ...

????????????????????????????????????? Photo by Kynslie Otte

Junior English major Taylor Scholle?s tattoos are inspired by her love of literature. Currently, Scholle has 12 tattoos. She was 17 when she got her first two tattoos, which include a treble clef on her right wrist and a bass clef on her left wrist.

?I was a proud band nerd,? Scholle said.

Scholle?s tattoos are significant for different reasons, but her Shel Silverstein tattoo is significant to her childhood. It illustrates the image of the child on the cover of Silverstein?s book ?Falling Up? on her right forearm.

?I?ve always loved reading, and I fondly remember reading lots of Shel Silverstein?s poetry with my mom and brothers,? Scholle said. ?A majority of my tattoos are literary-themed, and I?ll probably be covered in words and images from books by the time I?m old.?

Scholle also has the illustration of the protagonist from Norton Juster?s ?The Phantom Tollbooth? on the inside of her right bicep.

?I think reading that book was the moment I knew I would always love books,? she said. ?I also attribute my love affair with puns to that novel.?

One of Scholle?s tattoos was inspired by friendship and her belief in equality.

?I got a tattoo of an equal sign on my ring finger with a friend after he experienced some pretty awful, hateful words from some close-minded chumps and felt pretty shaken up,? she said. ?That was a pretty neat, healing experience for everyone involved.?

Most of Scholle?s tattoos were done at ?Sink or Swim Tattoo? by artist Thomas Hendrix. According to Scholle, he has some of the best prices in the city, and none of her tattoos has exceeded $100.

?Thomas always makes the experience comfortable and fun, so it?s always a pleasure going in to get another one,? she said.

Scholle?s family reacted positively to her tattoos. Her mother allowed her to get her first tattoos when she was underage, and the two have gotten tattoos together.

Scholle?s friends have responded similarly.

?Friends who don?t have tattoos are always amazed and awed and talk about how ?brave? I am,? she said. ?Friends with just as many or more tattoos than me will admire a new one for a moment, show me their new and bigger one, and then we?ll talk about plans for future ones.?

Scholle plans to get more tattoos in the future, and said, ?My only fear is that I?ll run out of space.?

Scholle is confident she will not grow to regret her tattoos.

?I can see my interests changing as I age, but that?s part of what I like about tattoos,? she said. ?If at one or any point in my life something was important enough to permanently put on my body, I feel that?s something I should always remember about that period in my life.?

If you or someone you know has a tattoo of significance and would like to be featured in the ?Tattoo of the Week? column, please contact\kotte@unews.com.

Bored Of Your Surroundings? Try These Great Home Improvement ...

Are you ready for a home improvement project, but need to hire help? If you get a bad feeling or don?t trust a contractor when you first meet, DO NOT HIRE THAT CONTRACTOR! Home improvements are meant to improve your house, but if the person doing the work doesn?t put in the effort to do quality work safely, then you could be in big trouble! Choosing a contractor you feel good about will better ensure that you get what you pay for.

For an unique alternative to solar or electrical lights, line pathways and drives with smooth stones (such as river or beach rocks) that have been painted with glow-in-the-dark paint. The rocks will provide a subtle, earthy glow at night so that you or your guests can see the way to your door. However, it is important to choose a paint that won?t look ridiculous in the daytime!

Switch your thermostat to a programmable model for an easy update that will save you money on your energy bills. These thermostats can be set to automatically adjust the temperature based on the time of day, so your furnace or air conditioner will run less often when you are at work or school or while you are sleeping.

Free up some cabinet space in your kitchen by using a metal desk organizer to store cutting boards, jelly roll pans and cookie sheets. This will not only give you the much needed cabinet space, but keep you from having to open every single drawer in your kitchen to find one item you could use.

Consider hiring a professional landscaper to help you design a beautiful garden for your front yard. You can decide how much maintenance and effort you are willing to put into the upkeep, and he or she can suggest plants and flowers that will allow you to meet that goal.

When planning home improvement projects, consider how long you plan on staying in your home. If you?re planning on selling it soon, you?re going to want to go with things that are quick and improve the house?s market value. If you?re planning on living in it for a long time, you can do the improvements that you personally want to make the house fit your dream.

To add appeal to your home and increase its value, consider replacing your existing shingles with architectural shingles. Also known as dimensional shingles, these shingles can simulate the textures of natural substances like slate or wood, and they resist wind better than regular shingles, making them an ideal choice if your home is located in a region that sees high winds.

If one has kids and wants to improve their home for them they should consider building a tree house or club house if they do not have a suitable tree. This will provide their kids with a place to play in and enjoy. They will also enjoy building it with their parents.

Install solar panels on your roof to use less paid electricity. Not only will your electricity bill be less, but you will have a smaller carbon footprint and be more environmentally friendly. The government is providing tax breaks for people who install solar energy equipment in their homes, so take advantage of it.

If you are trying to improve your cabinets, think about cleaning them rather than replacing them. Most cabinets will improve their look with a little cleaning. If you have cabinets that have small problems, such as smudges and mild grease build up, try using a dish soap and warm water solution to clean the exterior.

Paint should always be considered when starting home improvement to increase the value of your home. Not only does a fresh coat of paint make your home look nicer and fresh, it is also an extremely cheap way to add a great deal of value to your home. It also takes less time than other methods.

Even if you have done some home improvement projects in the past and received great results, you want to know the secret tips and advice that lies within the world of home improvement. You can never learn too much as there is always a strategy or technique you haven?t considered. The advice in this article could be a great stepping stone for learning a lot more.

Windows 8 could baffle, perplex customers

Windows 8 represents a radical departure from previous Microsoft operating systems, one that some early users have found frustrating.

By Peter Svensson,?AP Technology Writer / October 22, 2012

The release of Microsoft's?Windows?8?operating system is a week away, and consumers are in for a shock.Windows, used in one form or another for a generation, is getting a completely different look that will force users to learn new ways to get things done.

Microsoft is making a radical break with the past to stay relevant in a world where smartphones and tablets have eroded the three-decade dominance of the personal computer.?Windows?8?is supposed to tie together Microsoft's PC, tablet and phone software with one look. But judging by the reactions of some people who have tried the PC version, it's a move that risks confusing and alienating customers.

Tony Roos, an American missionary in Paris, installed a free preview version of?Windows?8?on his aging laptop to see if Microsoft's new operating system would make the PC faster and more responsive. It didn't, he said, and he quickly learned that working with the new software requires tossing out a lot of what he knows about?Windows.

"It was very difficult to get used to," he said. "I have an 8-year-old and a 10-year-old, and they never got used to it. They were like, 'We're just going to use Mom's computer.'"

Windows?8?is the biggest revision of Microsoft Corp.'s operating system since it introduced?Windows?95 amid great fanfare 17 years ago.

Ultimately,?Windows?grew into a $14 billion a year business and helped make former Chief Executive Bill Gates the richest man in the world for a time. Now, due to smartphones and tablets, the personal computer industry is slumping. Computer companies are desperate for something that will get sales growing again. PC sales are expected to shrink this year for the first time since 2001, according to IHS iSuppli, a market research firm.

The question is whether the new version, which can be run on tablets and smartphones, along with the traditional PC, can satisfy the needs of both types of users.

"I am very worried that Microsoft may be about to shoot itself in the foot spectacularly," said. Michael Mace, the CEO of Silicon Valley software startup Cera Technology and a former Apple employee.?Windows?8?is so different, he said, that manyWindows?users who aren't technophiles will feel lost, he said.

Microsoft is releasing?Windows?8?on Oct. 26, and it doesn't plan to cushion the impact. Computer companies will makeWindows?8?standard on practically all PCs that are sold to consumers.

Speaking to Wall Street analysts on Thursday, Microsoft's chief financial officer Peter Klein said he isn't very concerned that user confusion could slow the adoption of?Windows?8. When Microsoft introduces new features, he said, people eventually realize that "those innovations have delivered way more value, way more productivity and way better?usability." That's going to be true of?Windows?8?too, he said.

Instead of the familiar Start menu and icons,?Windows?8?displays applications as a colorful array of tiles, which can feature updated information from the applications. For instance, the "Photos" tile shows an image from the user's collection, and the "People" tile shows images from the user's social-media contacts. (Microsoft is licensed to use AP content in the?Windows?8news applications.)

The tiles are big and easy to hit with a finger ? convenient for a touch screen. Applications fill the whole screen by default ? convenient for a tablet screen, which is usually smaller than a PC's. The little buttons that surround?Windows?7 applications, for functions like controlling the speaker volume, are hidden, giving a clean, uncluttered view. When you need those little buttons, you can bring them out, but users have to figure out on their own how to do it.

"In the quest for simplicity, they sacrificed obviousness," said Sebastiaan de With, an interface designer and the chief creative officer at app developer DoubleTwist in San Francisco.

Moon formed from humongous Earth collision, new theories attempt to explain

The new research potentially plugs a big hole in the giant impact theory, long the leading explanation for the moon's formation.

By Mike Wall,?SPACE.com / October 18, 2012

This artist's conception of a planetary smashup whose debris was spotted by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope three years ago gives an impression of the carnage that would have been wrecked when a similar impact created Earth's Moon. A team at Washington University in St. Louis has uncovered evidence of this impact that scientists have been trying to find for more than 30 years.

NASA/JPL-Caltech

The moon did indeed coalesce out of tiny bits of pulverized planet blasted into space by a catastrophic collision 4.5 billion years ago, two new studies suggest.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The new research potentially plugs a big hole in the?giant impact theory, long the leading explanation for the moon's formation. Previous versions of the theory held that the moon formed primarily from pieces of a mysterious Mars-size body that slammed into a proto-Earth ? but that presented a problem, because scientists know that the moon and Earth are made of the same stuff.

The two studies both explain how Earth and?the moon?came to be geochemical twins. However, they offer differing versions of the enormous smashup that apparently created Earth's natural satellite, giving scientists plenty to chew on going forward.

A fast-spinning Earth

One of the studies ? by Matija Cuk of the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute in Mountain View, Calif., and Sarah Stewart of Harvard ? suggests the answer lies in Earth's rotation rate. [Video: New Ideas About the Moon-Forming Impact]

If Earth's day had been just two to three hours long at the time of the impact, Cuk and Stewart calculate, the planet could well have thrown off enough material to?form the moon?(which is 1.2 percent as massive as Earth).

This rotational speed might sound incredible, and indeed it's close to the threshold beyond which the planet would begin to fly apart. But researchers say the early?solar system?was a "shooting gallery" marked by many large impacts, which could have spun planets up to enormous speeds.

Cuk and Stewart's study, which appears online today (Oct. 17) in the journal Science, also provides a mechanism by which Earth's rotation rate could have slowed over time.

After the collision, a gravitational interaction between Earth's orbit around the sun and the moon's orbit around Earth could have put the brakes on the planet's super-spin, eventually producing a 24-hour day, the scientists determined.

A bigger impactor

Cuk and Stewart's version of the cosmic smashup posits a roughly Mars-size impactor ? a body with 5 percent to 10 percent the mass of Earth. However, the other new study ? being published in the same issue of Science today ? envisions a collision between two planets in the same weight class.

"In this impact, the impactor and the target each contain about 50 percent of the [present] Earth's mass," Robin Canup, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo., told SPACE.com via email.

"This type of impact has not been advocated for the Earth-moon before (although a similar type of collision has been invoked for the origin of the Pluto-Charon pair)," Canup added, referring to the largest moon of Pluto.

In her computer models, the symmetry of this collision caused the resulting moon-forming debris disk to be nearly identical in composition to the mantle of the newly enlarged Earth.

Canup's models further predict that such an impact would significantly increase Earth's rotational speed. But that may not be a big issue, since Cuk and Stewart's work explains how Earth's spin could have slowed over time.

A third study, published today in the journal Nature, determined that huge amounts of?water boiled away?during the moon's birth. The finding, made by examining moon rocks brought back to Earth by Apollo astronauts, further bolsters the broad outlines of the giant impact theory.

Though the gigantic smashup occurred 4.5 billion years ago, scientists may one day be able to piece together in detail how it all went down, Canup said.

"Models of terrestrial planet assembly should be able to evaluate the relative probability of, e.g., the collision I advocate vs. the one proposed by Cuk and Stewart," she said.

Alarming increase in malignant melanoma on the west coast of Sweden

Alarming increase in malignant melanoma on the west coast of Sweden [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 22-Oct-2012

Malignant melanoma is as much as 35% more common among people who live in Gothenburg and the region's coastal municipalities than those who live inland. Researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have found that the number of malignant melanoma cases in the Vstra Gtaland region has quadrupled since 1970.

Malignant melanoma has become increasingly common in the Western world over the past few decades. One of the biggest factors has been excessive and unprotected sunbathing despite widespread awareness of the health risks.

Melanoma takes a long time, sometimes several decades, to develop. For that reason, sunbathing habits from many years ago still affect a person's risk level.

According to a new study by researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, the number of melanoma cases in the Vstra Gtaland region has quadrupled among men and tripled among women since 1970.

"This represents a relative increase of more than 3% per year," says Magdalena Claeson, a researcher at Sahlgrenska Academy who participated in the study. "The increase in the region was considerably above average for the entire country."

The study found that 35% more men and 25% more women developed malignant melanoma in Gothenburg than in the inland municipalities. Fifteen per cent more women developed the disease in the coastal municipalities than inland.

One explanation is that inhabitants of Gothenburg and the coastal municipalities are exposed to the sun for more hours a day. A 2007 study conducted by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare found that inhabitants of Gothenburg and the coastal municipalities tend to take longer summer holidays in sunny countries and spend more time outdoors when abroad. Meanwhile, they are more likely to work indoors when they are in Sweden.

"The latest research suggests that melanoma is caused by this type of intermittent exposure to the sun," Magdalena Claeson says. "In other words, people get sunburned during their summer holiday and spend a lot of time indoors for the rest of the year."

The results have convinced the researchers that more preventive resources should be appropriated for the Vstra Gtaland region, particularly Gothenburg and the coastal municipalities.

"Among the measures likely to prove effective are educational initiatives among schoolchildren and sun protection information for people who travel abroad," Claeson says.

DIY Vinegar

DIY VinegarMaking vinegar starts with a culture just like yogurt or sourdough bread. Add to this wine and a year and you'll have wonderful vinegar that will impress ay foodie and only get better with time.

San Francisco culinary weblog The Eater's Digest shares that you can purchase starter cultures from winemaking shops but you can also just buy any bottle of unpasteurized vinegar from a local natural grocer or farmers market. Save the leftover bits of wine that are not consumed until you have at least a gallon or so. When you're ready to begin fill an oak barrel or ceramic crock with your unfinished wine, an equal amount of water, and the vinegar starter culture. It'll take a year for the batch to become fully ready to use but if you're bitten by the vinegar bug you can start new batches every few months so you'll frequently have new batches of vinegar maturing.

The Sociology Anthropology Undergraduate Society (SAUS) was getting saucy Thursday night, with two bands ready to get up on the stage at AfterMath, Anth-Soc trivia cards on the table, and a new $3 shot called the Indiana Jones (get it? Because of archaeology?). Needless to say, UFV?s social scientists were pretty happy.

The music was blaring, and the place was filling up. SAUS board members wandered from table to table selling the 50-50 draw. They had a deal ? $10 for the amount of tickets that can be measured from finger tip to fingertip, arms spread out. Good idea in theory, but perhaps they weren?t expecting the giant guy with the wingspan of an albatross sitting with his buddies at the back of the pub.

Students, delighted that they could use what they learned in the classroom in the real world, filled out the trivia cards.

The bands took a while to get on the stage. Daniel Moir and his crew got on first. Moir?s done pretty well as a Canadian musician?from Edmonton?at age 20. He sang some quiet folksy-pop music that smoothed the atmosphere in the darkly-lit pub. CIVL worked the sound. Moir has a very soft, mellow voice that matches his young, boyish face, and he had an honest, almost solemn or shy presence that made him feel pretty authentic.

Between the bands, Sophie Thomas, SAUS president and Caity Therrien, secretary, read out the trivia winners. Of course I didn?t bother guessing the questions ? as an English major, the phrase Homo floresiensis doesn?t ring any bells. Apparently, it?s the smallest human species that ever lived, standing at three feet tall. But, the species is nicknamed ?the hobbit? by anthropologists ? So I think we English majors can mingle with the Anth-Soc types after all.

Those who did guess correct won some cool stuff: gift certificates for shoes at Lady Fern and food at the Roasted Grape (both in downtown Abby), a Storm Brewing hoody and a beach bag filled with goodies. Mr. Albatross and his friends won the 50-50, of course.

This is THE SHOES came on loud and awesomely bluesy. Jereme Collette started off with heavy beats on the kick drum and electric guitar, and Sabrina Robson just blew everyone?s mind with a sexy, husky voice that was so powerful. Robson played the harmonica and smashed the cowbell with equal energy, and Collette rocked his beard (it just made that raw, rough vibe stronger). Robson?s vocals alone could have kept me there.

SAUS president Sophie Thomas was the one who brought forward the idea of bringing them out to Abbotsford; she knew them through her partner?s family. ?I actually met them a few months ago at a wedding, and had got chatting with them,? Thomas explained. ?They were quite keen on getting out to the Valley, so, I had heard them and then I presented the SAUS board members with the music ? that this was a really excellent opportunity, let?s get them out, students will love them ? Jereme was actually an Anthropology student himself so there?s that interesting connection there.

It can?t be denied that This is THE SHOES really made the night. Sophie Thomas said that ?the goal with looking at a band like them was primarily wanting to focus on a local band, somebody related and fun and that was going to be stimulating and enjoyable for the students as well.? It certainly was that!

All in all, SAUS board members were happy with the event. ?It ran smoothly! This was our first pub night, so there were little details we didn?t even think to take into account, like the kitchen closing at 8 p.m., we just assumed that it would be open,? Thomas laughed. ?So that would probably be the one glitch of the night.?

?Other than that, we had tremendous amount of support from Brad at AfterMath and from the SUS board members and from CIVL ? to get us all the information we needed in order to have it run smoothly, so because of that support it went very well.?
